I'm a newbie to Ram/Cummings and have introduced myself in the proper section but now I have a question. I searched forum and didn't see the answer so here it is.

I just purchased a 2014 2500 crew cab 4x4. Now I'm not new to towing and know that the "industry standard" is a 2" Receiver. In my plastic bag of owner manuals and such there was a short section of hitch that only had one hole for the pin so I knew it couldn't be an extension but I couldn't figure out what it was. The next day I went out to look and noticed that the Receiver under the bumper is a lot larger than 2" and figured out that the piece is a reducer. I showed a friend who has a 2012 3500 and his is a 2" ....

Why did Dodge change the "Industry Standard" 2" receiver. And do they make a larger size for or do I need to use this reducer every time???

Thanks in advance,

Ford has done this before. Did you get a camper package or something similar.

There's no reason for using one or the other.

There are plenty of ball mounts that carry north of 17,000 pounds so I can't explain why Dodge thought you'd need anything bigger.

Using the reducer with a normal 2" ball mount is fine, although it might increase the amount of slop the trailer tongue feels going down the road.

Thanks for quick replies..... In looking over the window sticker there is no "Tow Pkg Group" listed, but I did get a Trans oil cooler, heated t-Tow Mirrors, and trailer brake controller, but I believe those are standard. Unfortunately I knew more about this truck, (only because of my research) then the young kid salesman I had. :confused013:

I looked up the Reese Titan that jhenderson mentioned and that's is similar to what I have, so I guess must have some sort of HD towing Pkg it would seem.

Thanks again, this site is great!!!!

Thanks wixthedog.... I went to Tractor Supply today to look for what's available in 2-1/2" and they only had a 3" & 5" drop from Reese. Do you know if anyone makes an adjustable one????

From my experience you will be hard pressed to find one local, I know the TSC by the house doesn't have anything for it. I suggest etrailer.com, pretty friendly folks and good prices.

Once all the companys started the crazy stock weight tow changes in 2013. the lawyers and engineers feel the stock hitch and 2 inch wasn't enough.

So now we have 2.5 hitches

I use the 2inch adapter ...Mainly because i have a solid 2inch hitch with a 2 5/16 30,000 lb ball that i use to pull around our equipment trailer. So dont worry about using the adapter.
