So I needed some DEF and stopped at the local chain auto parts store who had it for buy one get one 50% off and I had a coupon. I used the info from this forum to read the date code and saw that it was made in 2015 so I did not buy it. The store manage was trying to help me out the way they always do and I told him what I was doing and he had no idea that the stuff had a date code or a life expectancy. I left without buying it and went to Walmart where it was made this year (2018) for 12.98 a 2.5 gallon jug. Thanks guys.

Boxed DEF is a safer buy than the truckstop stuff. You can always check the date code to verify the age of that DEF container.

You can't really verify how old some of the DEF is in the truckstop. Theoretically, those stops with a high turnover will have fresh DEF, but it seems possible, if not likely, that some old DEF will always be present.

Wait a minute...I think you paid too much for the Walmart DEF. It's $7.88 for a 2 1/2 gallon jug.
Check your receipt.

Yes, the date code is written in plain english and simple to read on the Walmart brand (SuperTech)

I bought blue def... lol
So kinda funny story. Wife has a Jeep Grand Cherokee Diesel. She works with a few folks who have Audi's and VW's. They got into a discussion somehow and she asked them where they put their DEF.

They all had no clue what DEF was and most were not sure where their Blue fluid actually went. But they knew that the dealer installed Blue into their cars.

Went to Walmart this weekend intending to pick up just a gallon of DEF. Its been a light year for DEF usage. Anyway the gallon jugs of Supertech were dated 101717. The 2.5 gallon Supertech was dated 8/8/18. Made sure the tamper proof seal was intact and $7.88 later the 2.5 gallon jug went home. Just for fun I used my OTC spectrometer for the first time. Perfect 32.5%. Probably will not need any more until next year.

Been to the auto parts chain stores and they say DEF will last forever! I also ran into a new RAM 2500 CTD owner getting fuel this morning and he had no clue DEF had a shelve life. So yes, the mystery goes on, some of us "need" to be informed consumers while others are just along for the ride.

Having ran nothing but bulk DEF in my 2018 4500 thru 42k miles, and all but 27.5 gallons thru my 2014 RAM 3500 thru 362k miles...I’ll have to certainly disagree with you.

Yup, total horse hockey!!!

Every gallon of DEF that has gone through my truck, save for two 2.5 gallon jugs one time, has come from truck stop bulk pumps.

It's just so much easier, more convenient, and CHEAPER, to get it at the pump.

You should reconsider carrying a jug of DEF in your truck. You never know when you might need that 2 1/2 gallons of liquid to extinguish a fire caused by a worn out water pump.

You sure do have a problem with my water pump crapping out, don't you?

But, if my truck did catch fire because the oem water pump failing caused a fire somehow, I sure wouldn't be trying to throw water, or DEF, on it. I'd just call the insurance company and a lawyer to start the law suit.

You seem a little on edge. Maybe a little PTWPS (Post Tramatic Water Pump Stress) ?

Being new to diesel and DEF I thought I would just add 2.5 gal jug when the gauge gets down between 1/4 and 1/2 tank...thoughts....
2.5 gallons filled my tank from "200 miles before speed limited to 5 MPH" to 3/4 of a tank of DEF. I tried to let it go low just to purge the old stuff.
