The NV 4500 had two different shift tops on it, a round one and a square one, correct? Is that the only difference between the two? And are the tops interchangeable? Will either one fit in all the 2nd gen trucks?
The tops will interchange, but not the only difference. I'm not sure of the year, but the older NV4500 had a problem with 5th gear nut coming loose. They tried to fix the issue by changing the output shaft design, but later found that the problem still existed, but on a smaller scale. Just some info that I've found over the years, doesn't effect interchangeability.
There are 2 "tops" one the shifter comes off by unbolting one it doesn't. Get the one where the shifter unbolts so you can install a short shifter. Oh an all 4500s had 5th gear issues, there is an upgraded nut to install to fix the issue.
