Anyways, as most of yall know I blew my Head Gasket five days before my wedding. I want to thank Chris at Rentless Diesel to getting my truck out so quickly (before the wedding).
So anyways. Chris could not find one spot on the gasket that told him "That is where it happened". There was one spot that was ify but not 100%. His other thought was the EGR cooler. Did it pop inside and let exhaust gas into the coolant side? Not sure but we pulled that sucker off as well. Now cooler free for what it matters. So anyways we went back in with a new gasket and ARP's 625 torqued to 165ftlbs. Some say that is a over kill but if you talk to the few that have experience with the 6.7 they say its a must, 425's wont cut it.
So here is another thing we sat on for a moment, (about 5 sec). The exhaust valves have a huge tolerance that they can be set at, I think the intake also but not as big spread. So I asked him to set the valves at the Min. With doing that there is a noticalbe difference in the sound of the truck, HUGE difference is sound. First thing I noticed is that I don't have that ticking or tapping sound anymore. I know a hand full of people have asked about it on here. Well that is what it is. The exhaust valves are set more to the Max clearance setting. The other thing that I have noticed now. Is the exhaust tone, Its louder all the way around, and deeper sounding. When you get on it hard in the lower gears it has this wicked V8 diesel pop to it. Kind of like a 6.0 PSD when they have a good bit of HP added to them. So anybody that is going to mess with there valves, set them to the Min setting that Cummins recommends.
OH... I dont know the story on this truck just yet. but when I was picking up my truck from Chris another guy from the Conroe area (I guess) called to make appointment to get his head gasket replaced on his 6.7. I will find out more about that one this week.
