I have been experiencing a little bit of a rattle in 5th gear, so I pulled the tail housing off my tranny and checked the 5th gear nut and it is tight. I also rechecked the fluid (changed 5k ago) and it is clean with no signs of any filings. I pulled the PTO covers off and looked for any obvious signs of wear. All the gears look good and have no pitting or chips. The only thing I could find was a little play in the teeth of the 5th gear syncros. I don't know how much play there is supposed to be so I am not sure if it is too much. I reinstalled everything and the noise is still there. It has since continued to get worse. There is a high pitched fast rattling sound in my stick shifter at higher rpm while accelerating in almost all gears, worse in 5th, and a dull rattling sound deep in the tranny while de-accelerating at low rpm in 5th gear only.

Anyone have any ideas, or dealt with similar problems? I'm at a loss!
