Well i took my truck in because i needed the recall done for the J35 bc i live in California, and I got the slip for my update...then updated my truck in the parking lot....and rolled some coal out of the parking lot with all mods still on my truck just droped it off and picked it back up. Dreading taking of my exhaust because of my long arm kit...and plugging everything back in. I got my DMV registration in the mail today...and low and behold my fees went down, and it says i can renew online. I live in the San Jose, CA area, and it says nothing about SMOG..WOOT!! Just thought i would share for those who are worried like i was.

That's great, I talked to a diesel smog guy in the north bay and he said that new trucks may not need testing for five years but he wasn't sure. It's a bunch of BS anyway, a friend w a Dmax went in and the idiot tried to fail him because he has gauges, he told my buddy that in diesel smog school they teach that a boost and pyro mean a programmer. He was finally passed but they only did a visual and a throttle snap test, I'm thinking a stealth rig would be the best way to go.

Yea I was excited to hear i didnt have to do it. Most new cars need to wait 5 years before going is what i heard...but you never know how california is going to be.

Gauges mean that we are smart lol....but i took the smog school, and it says do not fail a truck because it has gauges..

My 08 was also allowed to renew online. As far as i know new diesels will not be given the 5 year grace period. It has to do with the last digit of your vin. Even numbers start smog this year, and odd start next year.

There is NO 5 year grace period. The last digit in you VIN determines whether or not you will smog test.

I live in San Luis Obispo and in April I got the damn notice on the renewal saying Smog Test Required. So I just changed the address to my cabin in Mono county and voila no smog test required.:party018: Mono county only does testing on change of ownership.
