No Power PERIOD!!

1294 Views 14 Replies 10 Participants Last post by  Lead Head
My girlfriends dad bought a '95 2500 4x4 about a month ago.. this thing is a pile of crap.. it makes no power period all over the tach.. It has 4" exhaust all the way out from the turbo and a cold air K&N intake AND the 2nd generation IP

from a stop, when you stand on it, it does literally nothing.. then the turbo whines up and then it thinks about moving.. when you driving down the road and you stand on it, it shifts down out of OD but still no power...

from what i've read i think the next step is #100 throttle plate???

help would be much appreciated :S:

they are f'n dogs stock, the 215hp engines are bad enough, i cant imagine what a dog that would be to drive with the 160hp pump!

Next step would be to get some more fuel moving into it.

Also, first things first, you will want to get some gauges in the truck. Boost/Pyro/Trans Temp.

One thing to keep in mind, that stock auto is NOT going to like the added power, especially if its used for towing. Keep in mind that it should have a few dollars spent on that before it nukes.

fuel filter/ air filter and you can check for any boost leaks. take the plate out.
If it runs good and has no power check the AFC. A stock '95 is no hot rod, but it is not too bad. If the hose to the AFC is ok, then remove the AFC, cover the hole with something (duct tape will work) to keep oil from flying out and take it for a test drive.
I thought the '95 12V was the more sought after engine???

the air filter is fine, it has a K&N cold air kit..
i'll try changing the fuel filter, not sure how old it is??

but something is definitely wrong.. i mean my '82 chevy 6.2L diesel, w/ 302,000 miles on it, has more power than this thing..

it runs great, idles great, fires up first turn of the key, just seriously lacks the power..
sorry for the nooooob question but what is the AFC?? lol
Check out the link i posted above for pics and info. The AFC is a big ol housing that sits atop the gov housing on the pump, its job is to control preboost and transitional fueling.

Nothing at all special about a 95, actually, the 94/95s are common for pump failures.

Also check out the fuel prefilter/screen and maybe remove the fuel heater while its apart. check out joegs writeup here for pics and info

96 TO 981/2 are the higher horse power engines not 94 to 95

also you could be loosing a lot of hp through your tranny
That's true, but it the AFC is not working it's a lot worse. Simple to test. Take the AFC as I described above and go for a test drive. The AFC is a simple contraption. It's just a throttle stop. When boost goes up it moves the stop so you have more fueling and more boost to move the stop some more until the stop has moved enough to hand off fuel limiting to the plate. If the boost is not getting there or the diaphragm is bad then the throttle stop never moves. The result is that you are getting far less fuel than the pump can normally deliver. Kind of like having a piece of wood under the fuel pedal.
Make sure you have enough fuel pressre at the IP. Mine was low and when adjusted up truck had more power and better milage.
Low fuel presure due to a clogged main filter or prefilter is probably the most common cause of low power.

Check fuel pressure http://www.cumminsforum.com/forum/94-98-tech-articles/137589-check-fuel-pressure-12-valve.html

If you don't want to go though the hassle of measuring fuel pressure replace the overflow valve. >

hahaha its not mine its my girlfriends dads.....

well right on.. thanks a lot for all the advice.. i'll try all your tips and get back to ya..

as for adjusting the pump?? my neighbor who use to turn wrenches for dodge told me the 2nd generation pump (he referred to it as the 250 horsepower pump) is the pump to have on that motor but i guess its doesn't have the adjusting screw????? i'll get some pictures of the pump on here in a few days.. i wont be back in town for a couple days..

nah! if its 95 its a 160 hp motor. still make plenty of power with a few simple pump mods. i bought a 95 a couple years ago they guy said it was a piece and just over gave it to me......ended up having a cut intercooler boot! the lower part of the fenders are good at that!
If you want the turbo to last, ditch the K&N for a good high flow paper filter. Cold air intakes are kind of a gimmick for Intercooled diesels, but high flow filters are not. Unfortunately K&Ns flow more at the expense of filtering ability
