Got the 06 mega 1 year ago and now it has 101,000 miles on it and a slight tapping sound. Put it in the shop for oil and filters change. Had the mechanics do a valve adjustment too. Now after the valve adjustment it has no power. RPMs would not go over 1200 at WOT. Got good boost, fuel, and pedal readings on the CTS. Truck ran fine before I took it in to the shop. At first they said there was to much play in the main shaft in the turbo and it was not building boost and that was the problem. Got a BD single. Problem still there. Now they say low compression "international engine problem". I think they botched the valve lashing and it's loosing the compression that way.

anyone with experience doing valve adjustments know if those symptoms could be caused by a botched adjustment?

Pretty simple. Had power and ran fine before valve adjustment, and no power after valve adjustment. The valves are set wrong. I would not take it back to that shop. Do it yourself. Plenty of videos and writeups on the web.

Def sounds like valves are too tight esp if all you get is 1200 rpms unless in limp mode

Yeah I definitely wouldn't take it back to a shop that can't do a dang valve adjustment. I'd suggest redoing the valves yourself too. It can be done start to finish in an hour or less. And most importantly you'll know its done right.

There are some great write ups on how to adjust your valves here on this forum. The only special tool that you need is a set of 45° bent feeler gauges. If you do not have the bent gauges, you will have a very hard time doing the job. If you do get these bent gauges then it is no problem at all. Very simple to do, not scary, Your intake valves should be set at .010" and the exhaust valves set at .026" I think. Check the tag on the side of your valve cover and it will tell you. Also, the ticking sound is very common on Cummins engines that have over 100,000 miles on them. My 06 5.9 does it too, and drives me nuts.

Intake .010 and exhaust .020 is what I use. .026 is something to do with emissions. And you can use straight feeler gauges if you pull the rocker housing off. That's what I do.

The bent ones are soooooo much more convenient. Why did they go to .026 on the 06's?

I just bought a set of feeler gauges from Advanced Auto Parts and bent them to a 45* for them to work. I set all my exhaust at .020" and intake at .010".

I believe all 04.5-06's have this for the spec. Has to do with the late post injection event and the in cylinder EGR type deal they did on these engines for emissions with the tight spray pattern. Strictly emissions driven.

Talked to the mechanic this morning. Asked what they where lashed to. He said 10 and 22. He thinks I need a head gasket and that he can't do it at his shop because of the size of the truck. I asked him to do a compression test. He said that he doesn't have the tool to do it. Sooooooo I'm getting it towed out of there and looking for a better place to take it.

Take the damn truck home and lash them valves yourself man! Not that hard at all!

As it was mentioned before, seems pretty simple to figure out what happened to your power... If you take it in with power and they do a valve lash and now it doesn't have power OBVIOUSLY the shop did something wrong... He can say he adjusted them to .010 and .020 but sounds like he didnt.... or he did it backwards and did the exhaust at .010.....

VERY SIMPLE job man.... take it home and get on the forum and we will walk you through it man!

It's very possible they were done backwards. Or all at .10 or .20. I know a guy who did a couple exhaust at 10 here recently lol

I did mine at 10 and 20 and the truck struggled to breathe. Set them back to .26 and all is good now. It was definitely quieter though and sounded nice but I couldn't mash the throttle without the truck shaking and shuddering. It had to be eased up to highway speed.

Another thought... Maybe the guy doing the adjustment didn't find top dead center at all? Maybe he didn't then rotate the engine again to do the second half of the adjustment?

Hard to say.... Still suggest doing it yourself...
