No brake lights!!!

Ok so today I noticed that I had no brake lights but all other lights worked,so I checked all fuses and checked good. I replaced brake light switch and noticed that I have one hot wire only when the ignition is on and the brake switch unplugged. When I plug the brake switch in I have no hot wires??? Any help for the newbie would be greatly appreciated!

I would check wires on the lights themselves, i had a loose ground which caused mine not to work.

Thanks for the reply I will check and I will also add that if I use the button on my brake controller the brake lights work like they should,
