Ok so I'm new to the site and the diesel thing. I purchased a 98.5 2500 long bed 4wd and automatic. It was from the original owner with only 120K mile not to shabby. Main questions are, what upgrades do I do. Just looking for a lil oommmff. I don't want to kill it. I'd like to know what edge programmer will work on my truck. I'd like to get one with the LCD read out, so i don't have to have alot of gauges. I see so many on here for 01-02 bur don't know if it will work for my truck. I've been looking at exhaust like flo-pro. Intake elbows and enclosed air intake. I know its long but I have so many questions. But have to do one upgrade at a time, kinda hard with 3 little ones. Any ideas would be great for the right direction. If u know anyone selling some of these items please pm me or something need all the help I can get. Well sorry for the long list just excited about my 1st diesel. Thanks for your time.

The first thing you should do if the truck does not already have it is get a lift pump, either a fass or an airdog. the new edge jwa with the cts monitor act as your gauges. thats what i have. But at the very minimum get a lift pump first otherwise you will learn the hard way like i did WHEN it fails and kills your vp44. not fun.

this seems to be one of the more popular way to set a vp truck up.

lift pump (airdog/fass)- this will insure your vp will have enough fuel.

gauges (boost, fuel pressure, egt, trans temp)- this will let you see whats going on with your engine/truck. they will let you know when to get off the skinny pedal, or if its running right.

exhaust (stack, or tbe)- will help the enfine breathe better and lower egt's

moduel (fuel/timing)- mo powah!!

tranny mods- keeps the power to the ground

injectors- again, more power

turbo- (you see the pattern here right)

supporting mods (studs, o rings, valve springs, ext.) hold everything together with all the new mods.

Well thanks for the responses, what does one of those lift pumps go for? Now the module what the heck is that, I see you said fuel and timing but I figured one of those edge programmers would do that as well but I'm new so I could be wrong. Anyone selling a lift pump? Do I put the lift pump on first or only when I get something with a program on my truck?
Thanks for the help,
Dave.

Well thanks for the responses, what does one of those lift pumps go for?$400-500. they are DIESEL pumps. not "universial" lift pumps Now the module what the heck is that, I see you said fuel and timing but I figured one of those edge programmers would do that as well but I'm new so I could be wrong. a moduel is big boy talk for a "chip". an edge comp, edge juice, quad adr, and a few others will add fuel and timing. Anyone selling a lift pump? check out the vendors here. most even offer CF discounts. Do I put the lift pump on first or only when I get something with a program on my truck? yes, you stock one is junk and are prone to failure. once the lift pump goes out, it ususaly wipes out the injection pump.
Thanks for the help,
Dave.

Newbie on fass pumps

I saw a Fass pump on eBay for 274.00 is that a good price. It was a stock replacement but said it provided 33% more fuel. Is this on ok to purchase or is there one someone would reccomend. Check it out and let me know your thoughts or what to get!
Thanks

WELCOME TO THE FORUM!!!

All depends on what your planning on for future mods. IMO a little over kill now is cheaper in the long run. I'd go with the larger pump. I'm not familiar with the one you saw on ebay. It may be a direct replacement for the oem. If thats the case it would be sitting in the same heat that kills the oem. Best location is frame rail or in tank. JMO.

id actualy call the company to see whats up. it seems a little low to me.

it may be lagit though. there are guys out there that will add "... and diesel preformance" to their dads buisness. then they sell crap at $2 over cost just to make friends (and put real diesel shops out of buisness).

I'm looking for a little more power but not overkill. Just some bolt ons like new intake elbow other than stock that picks up a few hp then a volant intake system or that type, and a 4" exhaust by somebody that's affordable I've been looking at flo-pro, and and edge system or some type to have a LCD type of thing to just have to see what kind of boost, egts and so on with it set on towing and that's it. Not towing much weight maybe 7500 lbs don't want to kill the. Thoughts!

If I can get a monitor to watch everything instead of having 3 gauges. Does other manufacture make an affordable piece. What do you think one would pick ip from a turbo back exhaust system and intake system?

Dont mess with the ebay fass pump, its the drp pump and not much better than stock. You can get a raptor 150 for $399 from any vendor here. 98-00 edge modules will work on your truck, the 01-02 boxes will not work on the earlier trucks. Look at rollin smoke diesel for good 4&5 inch exhaust systems. I have an edge comp and a quadzilla commander for my gauges and it works good. I will eventually switch to stand alone gauges but I had it left over from my quad box and its works. You should be fine running a edge juice/attitude on level 3 with a stock auto without any problems if you drive sensible and the edge should come with a boost elbow and thats a definate for more power and decreased egt's.
