Have had an 04 and 93 cummins, sold them and bought this 04.5. Has a 07 front clip. Lots of extras. Prev owner told me it has had a billet torque converter and shift kit put in. Smarty so6 tuning. Truck has 280,000 and runs very strong.

Pulled the inspection cover and to me it looks aftermarket...Triple disk? No markings. Lock up is very hard and near jolts the truck. Also seems to lock up a bit early (Doesn't hold 4th gear long enough either) Tow/haul mode it shifts good. A little flaring on the 1-2 shift.

Just wondering what i have here guys...

No ideas?

Also, i think it may be time for a set of injectors. The worry is the miles on the truck...Is it worth putting 3k into it? Any of you guys still hot rodding at 300k+ miles?

Engine does not have any blowby, Just idles a bit rough with a miss here and there (mostly when cold) Truck is very clean also, its from CA.

TC may be aftermarket, the way to tell if it has billet cover is if you can see stud flanges at flex plate, where billets are solid and nut flange is not visible.

That solid shift does tend to occur with the triples, but can also occur from Shift Kits.

Confused about "Doesn't hold 4th gear long enough"??

Injectors! Any other signs leading you to believe they are bad?

Say when getting onto highway and accelerating on the hard side, it goes into overdrive very quickly and sort of bogs the engine down. Same with around town, around 45-50 MPH. I would think it should rev out a bit longer before going into overdrive. I also have the mash the pedal to the floor to get it to downshift out of overdrive...

The rough/lopey idle on cold startup, Give it a rev and on engine decel it sort of misfires. I get a misfire here and there at cold idle. A constant tick cold and hot (Valves just adjusted (10 IN/20 EX)... Just things that my other 04 (had new injectors, but 180K miles on engine) didnt do. It does run smooth and strong otherwise, though. Around 17 MPG.

Previous owner told me injectors were done around 160K which tells me it may be about time. Still has factory fuel filter setup also.

Just FYI - 4th Gear is OD. Sounds like you are expecting to stay in 3rd a bit longer. When mine is happy, that 45-50 mph into 4th occurs and it just tractors around at low 950 rpm. I refer to it as the sweet spot. TC is all locked up, no slip Flash Stall speed, engine torque is being used efficiently.

Putting pedal to the floor to downshift when getting on freeway after OD. Is that gradual, or are you stomping on it?

Others will chime in hear shortly I am sure.

Trying to say to get it to downshift out of od I need to put the pedal to the floor before it shifts. Gradual pedal doesn't do it.

Does it sound like i may need injectors? Anything else to check for a ticking sound? The 4th inj. line clamp was loose. Its a pretty quiet tick but enough that it bugs me. Loudest around 1500 rpm in OD lugging around.

Injectors. (don't know that you are showing enough signs for need of new injectors)

How is your crank time to start?
Common Rail need to reach rail pressure treshold to start injector flow. Most cracked injectors will show up at crank/start.

Are you "making oil"?
Oil level rises due to injector leak

Exhaust Smoke Excessive - Black or White??

**Try a couple of tanks with Royal Purple Injector Cleaner and Fuel Filter. I used this for the first time at 100K mi. just because I had a bit of black smoke at heavy throttle.
**You can also use Seafoam in Filter housing, starting it for a moment, then letting it sit for a day or over nite.

My mileage is around the same as yours and our mods look pretty similar. So for the hot rod question I say go for it! I just ordered EFI Live for mine and can't wait to put it on!

As for the injector question, mine have around 100k miles and I recently had to replace one due to a bad solenoid which it set a CEL for. Didn't have the funds to replace the set so just did the one and rocked on and so far so good.

IMO this is a great group of guys but a lot tend to be overly cautious which is great but honestly if you start having a major issue with your truck you're going to notice pretty quickly, not have to hunt it down.

I have the same ticking as you, did the same as you and set the valves which were all in spec and just chalked it up to good since I have zero other signs of a bad injector or pump other than a little puff of black at start up and first leaving from a stop but no more than my other 2006 had when it only had 30k miles on it.

Good maintenance, sensible driving, and taking care of any problems right when they occur and she'll go another 280k miles!

Cummins can be 3 to 5 seconds on a Common Rail before rail pressure reaches threshold to start injector flow. Most cracked injectors will show up at crank

Cranks right up quickly. does have a bit of blue/white on initial startup.

Oil level rises due to injector leak

Just changed the oil so too early to tell.

Used Power service and howes meaner kleaner. Ill try the fuel filter. Has a smarty set on 7 so it produces quite a bit of black smoke. None at idle.

Did a gauge install today. I started messing with the pressure relief valve, took it off and cleaned it. Truck seemed to run better after. Then i clamped off the wastegate line just to see if it was building boost OK, as it was making only 20 psi max (smarty wastegate off). Now i am throwing codes P0107, P0073, And P0480. Truck is ticking worse and idles badly, sounds like its misfiring. Also have a diesel fuel leak, haven't confirmed its source as its too dark out. I made sure i tightened down the pressure relief and banjo well earlier.

Talked to Todd at TC diesel and he recommended a full replacement of Injectors and CP3. Think i may go that route.

Good recommendations for 100hp sticks?
