As the title says, I bought a new truck. I esigned all the paperwork, since I bought the truck out of state. For those that have done this, what does California need to see to register in state. Can AAA office help me on this? Or do I need to go to the dmv? Do I need to weigh it, I have heard rumors of this? What else if anything else is needed? The truck is a 2018 3500. I pick it up and bring it back home this Friday.

Thanks,

Chris

Congrats, I bought mine out of state as well. It's a bit more headache, but pretty straight forward. You'll have to get it weighed, pay registration, and get it smogged. They'll want a copy of the title (finance company has to send this to them) And then you'll pay sales tax if you haven't already.

Congrats on the new truck! IDK about your dealer, or which state you bought in nor how they do things. But I have bought in Montana, while being an Arizona resident and the dealer there just sent all the paperwork to AZ DMV and all I had to do was go to DMV when they notified me, pay the bill and leave with my tags. Also have done similar things when purchasing out of state when I lived in ND. Is was always a no hassle purchase. Write check, show driver license for proof of residence, take paperwork home, go to DMV, pay fees, get tags.
Of course MT has no sales tax so it is a non issue there, but I had to pay tax in my home state when I registered, but when I purchased in SD with a ND driver license they did not charge me SD sales tax, but then I had to pay ND tax upon registration.
In other words, it has never been an issue to purchase across state lines.

They will be able to register the truck for you (or should be) - I've bought 2 vehicles from dealers out of state and they always just filed the registration through my state's DMV (they may have to get the fees from the DMV first so they charge you accurately) -

Plates and registration came through the mail - the dealer charged applicable sales tax and title fees for the state of registry at point of sale (its not hard to figure out)

Had my last vehicle shipped from FL to my house - I paid the shipping co. directly -

Dave Smith mailed me the paperwork via Priority Mail.
AAA can't help with new car registration, only used. The dreaded DMV visit a necessity.
I didn't have to smog it back in '06. Smogging a new vehicle out of state these days is just another cash cow for Taxsome.

did this with my Ford. bought in ID, registered in CA
You have to get it weighed. get it weighed in the county you live. I had it weighed on the way home at a certified CAT scale in NV, but CA did not accept it. but they did accept the weight from the local dump scale (ridiculous)
Then you have to get it smogged.
The dealership then sent all the original documents to me, and I had to go to the DMV.
I paid sales tax to ID, but then had to pay the difference for CA.

It was kind of a pain. It takes time and usually a couple trips to the DMV

Thanks for all the responses! I now know what to do. I’m picking up the truck this Friday and needless to say I’m pretty excited to get it. One last follow up question. Was the tax and registration costs received from Dave Smith; was that pretty close to what California will charge me? Or was there a large price difference? I was shocked they are charging me $610 or so for the registration and I would think it would be more than that.

Thanks,

Chris

^ Guess if I was researching these questions online, I'd look at the CA dmv website. Might have better info than the forum?
Most states tell you what the tax and tags rates are. If you don't already know what your sales tax rate is.

I would just double check with Dave Smith to see if they checked with the CA DMV - tell your salesperson it would suck to do all the paperwork on this deal and get a large bill from your state for the difference in fees a month or two later -

It honestly isn't rocket science and the woman or man in the title/paperwork dept. at the dealership should be more than capable to call the CA DMV or go on their website and figure out how much they should be charging you -

Think about it this way, even if they charged you Idaho or whatever state it is, fees, and your states fees were LESS, do you really expect Dave Smith to send you a refund check for the difference?

See what I'm getting at? - Its not rocket science on their end they give a VIN to the DMV and it calculates the title fee, registration fee, and tax - When we bought my wifes car out of Florida it was easy for them to apply registration and sales tax for our state, we weren't paying Florida fees -

Again I would double check on your final deal sheet but they have more than enough time to have your proper fees ready on your paperwork when you arrive tomorrow -

Lets get some live shots of that sweet rig after you pick it up!

Way back in the day I was going to buy from Dave smith and a few others. I am from CA and every time I called they told me the money I would save by buying from them would be absorbed when I tried to bring it back to CA.. THat taxes and license would eat up any savings. The only way they said it may be profitable is if I could register it in another state and drive it _____ miles then bring it into CA as used.

Thanks for the advise. It’s a done deal, I put my down payment down. Esigned everything. My flight leaves tomorrow at 11 to get it. So sometime tomorrow I will see the truck.

I’m just preparing myself on how much I could possible owe the dmv. They took 5k worth of taxes and registration. So hopefully the dmv doesn’t ask for too much more.

Damnnnn CA has a lot of fees, I would *HOPE* that if they took 5k of fees and registration that it covers CA, that sounds ridiculously high for Idaho, for reference here in NC we have title and plate fee, 3% highway use tax (no sales tax on vehicles just put HUT), and then you pay property tax yearly on your vehicle which doubles as registration (about $400 for my truck this year, so I was just under $2k, on an MSRP of $63.5k, rebates and discounts took me down to just under $52k, I was out the door at $54k (dealers fee was $599) - good luck - either way you'll be hapy with your new rig!

5K will be very close depending on what you paid for the truck. The 610.00 for reg. is a little low, more like 875ish. You will still need to have it weighed and get it smogged.

Love the color combo!!

doesn't matter if it sounds high for Idaho.
Idaho sales tax is at least 6%.

5K probably is enough to cover ID tax and dealer fees. I bet CA will get you for registration and the difference in sales tax for the county you live in

I bought in Idaho...

Picked out a truck from their inventory Online.
Asked for an OUT-THE-DOOR-PRICE....Got it in 5 minutes.
They put the truck On Hold for Me.

Bought Airline Ticket - $84
Flew Up 3 days later - they met me at Airport in Limo and drove me to dealership.

All Paperwork was there waiting for me - I signed then !
I wrote a check for:
- Truck Price
- Kalifornia Sales Tax
- Dealer Docs $299

Drove Home.
- Once Home - The Dealer Called to coordinate with Me, then Overnight Mailed the MSO to my local DMV.
- I showed up the Next day with truck so DMV could Verify the CA Emission Sticker on truck, and collect my License Plates.

Done.

What kind of savings? Local dealer near me here in California has Laramie 18 msrp 65k final price 56k. In the market for new 2500. Curious on savings vs Dave smiths
Dealer dependent really, different times of the year, different prices. I bought from Dave Smith in 2015, got a killer deal, a price that no one would give me in California. End of the year savings can be better out of state compared to California

I was directed to DS by a sales woman at a dealer.
No manuals in Southern County in '06. Dave Smith gave me a terrific deal on a special order..
Dillon's a good one too.
