Hi guys i just bought my first diesel, 2011 dodge ram 2500 laramie 4x4. Just had so quick questions. Do i need the delete kit? Can u just do an exhaust job instead. Will a tuner do the same functions? Not up to code with all the performance stuff yet. But if someone can give me a run down i would take the help

If you take any factory emission stuff off you'll need a tuner. No sense in messing with your exhaust unless you are wanting to remove your cat/DPF as the muffler is just a flow through anyway. Typically when deleting the DPF and EGR stuff you'll see 1-4mpg improvement.

Seems like, from what I have read, you can tune without a delete. But you cannot delete with out a tune.

Second thing I have read, doing an exhaust system without first deleting is pointless. No power increase, MPG increase, or noise increase. All the restriction is at the Cat/DPF's.

Dont ask me about what programmer to use, as I am still learning about that. But the above seems to be the consensus.

As far as tuners go, smarty and H&S are by far the most popular. I've had both. Smarty seemed simpler, but some like more features. The only reason I went with the H&S mini maxx this time as opposed to the smarty again was I was getting an automatic this time and wanted to get the over drive software for the transmission. Smarty doesn't have any tranny tunes.

Doing any of this does it void the warranty?do u think doing the delete for now is the best
Gonna have to do things one at a time , I'm gonna get wheels and tires too
The most simple answer is, Yes it can and or will void your powertrain warranty. Though, some people have had better luck with their dealers.

Also, if you are going to do it one piece at a time, get the programmer first.

You are the only one that can decide what is best for your situation.

Thanks for the info, I think I would like the better fuel mileage , and looking for a good sounding exhaust ,nothing crazy loud but just a good sound

Sounds like you are pretty much in the same boat I currently am. Though, I have issues. And I know at some point, it wont be enough for me. But, I am going to try to stand strong on it. Lol :hehe:

As far as your question about doing an exhaust system, it depends on your definition. If you consider replace the entire exhaust system doing an exhaust then yeah you could do a turbo back system. If you don't want anything too loud though I would just do the down pipe/DPF delete as it will keep your factory muffler and tail pipe and get rid of the emissions equipment

Check out the threat called common power train warranty issues, or something like that, in the powertrain section. You'll find that if you deleted, and the dealership you frequent routinely denies warranty claims on deleted trucks, you're still not likely to need a warranty unless you're just really ragging your truck.

On my 09, I deleted at about 30k. On my 12 I deleted at 2000 and would have much sooner if I had the time!

Congrats on your new truck.... So here are some details:

- Deleting means getting rid of your emissions crap
- Deleting means you are kissing good bye to your warranty
- Deleting means your truck will thank you on the long run
- Deleting means you will fall in love with your truck.
- Deleting means you will have a lot of fun with your truck

Hope this helped... :)

As for the exhaust, you can do a catback or a axle back but that is purely for looks only and will not improve anything in regards to performance. If you do a turbo back exhaust then you will need a tuner to get the truck to run right as you will be getting rid of the cat/DPF.
