So I live in North Dakota and own a construction business. Sick of every year buying sand bags for the bed, this year I measured the area behind the gooseneck ball and made a frame out of 2x4's. When we had concrete pours we would bring the forums and fill them with concrete then bent a piece of rebar into a U shake and placed in center for a handle. We had out first snow today so I went to my land and took the bobcat and hooked a chain to the rebar and lifted up and placed in bed of pick up. Weighs between 600 to 1000 pounds. Doesn't help I need shocks bad but besides that it's pretty much perfect and still have access to gooseneck ball. Anyone ever done this ?

Suggestion: whatever you put back there should be anchored to the bed of the truck so it doesn't become a death star if you have a bad incident with something in front of you.

I made a 2x4 box between the wheel well and tail gate and placed cement blocks in it. I also keep 2 or 3 sand bags back there in case I need to help someone get unstuck.

I always throw about 10, 40 pound bags of softener salt all the way in the back of my truck each winter. Serves two purposes 400 pounds of weight and on more then one occasion I have either got myself unstuck or pulled someone else out on ice with the salt.

My buddy went off the edge of the road December of 2007 in Northern Iowa the road were just a sheet of ice. 4 wheel drive didn't matter with those conditions, I just cut open a bag threw a couple hand fulls of salt in front of all four tires and walked him right out. Now I make sure I do it each winter. When spring rolls around I throw all the bags in my garage and use them throughout the summer for what they are intended for.

I rounded the corners on a couple 2x4s, which you can sorta see in this pic. They fit into the bet slots just right, and the space between the two gets filled with 10 60# bags in the winter. Helps some.

The extra 2x4 at the rear of the bed is my ghetto retention system, so I don't have to chase tie downs, ball carriers, tow straps, etc. around the bed of the truck.

Another option is to line the bed with a tarp and fill it with water. When it freezes you'll have a few hundred pounds of weight in the bed. When it warms up it kind goes away all by itself.
