Hey everyone,

As some of you know I take delivery of our new truck tomorrow. For those who don’t know it’s a 2017 3500 Big Horn MegaCab with the AISIN )pictured below) You all have been very supportive on this process and I appreciate the feedback and suggestions. Now that all I have to do is pick up the keys I have some questions, concerns and comments.

Emissions: have they been refined? I have come from two Duramax trucks. Both ended up with EFILive both had emissions issues. How are they doing overall, EGR issues???
Goal——not to really mess with this one

Mechanical problem: I have been told by friends and techs that I have to delete right away, get new manifolds and other things...I’m a fairly competent mechanical guy and I find this insane.

Things I should do, plan on and things I should keep in mind.

Thanks everyone

Nice truck! Emissions are way more reliable now. I've had only a sensor replaced that caused a CEL, no limp mode. Other guys on here have over 300k reliably. Are the tech's that are telling you this Ram techs, do they work on the latest year vehicles?

Edit: Things you should do:drive it and not worry about anything. Keep an eye on the front tire wear and if you have pulling or wearing badly, look up thuren alignment specs.

Thanks for the info. Great to know. I’ll keep an eye on that. I hear the bushings can start to wear at 20k? That’s 6 months for me.

Techs are not Ram techs but general service techs at my local diesel shop. Great guys and have helped me with a lot but in general I’m posting here to get the real story.

If you haven't already, make sure to do the highway speed test drive for a couple miles, between 70-80mph, if their are any vibrations present, i'd be very cautious about completing the deal. Nothing worse that buying a truck with the shakes and spending a ton of your time chasing a problem.............

Yes.

There is a very large thread on this ongoing issue. Some people have it, others don't. I'm not trying to scare you, just inform you.

Some of the remedies include:
- road force balancing tires (correctly)
- replacing stock tires
- quality control issues with oem wheels
- quality control issues with rear end components
- drive shaft imbalance issues
- quality control issues with torque converter

Before you sign on the dotted line and fork over a ton of cash, the ride quality better be to your approval. and i wouldn't agree to the whole "we'll fix it for you after the deal type of thing".

i’m real close to ordering a 2018 3500 srw, do they have these issues also?

They all can have the issue. 99% or better dont have it.

Most people wouldn't even notice it unless it was severe or someone pointed it out.

I love the "you have to delete right away" guys. Nothing like throwing your warranty away right away. RAM appreciates it but there is a low risk you will not. I would hate to replace that engine on my own from a manufacture defect. Many people are well over 300K miles with stock emissions and no real problems at all. Some will tell you about the EGR and how that will kill your engine, but no one can point me to a single thread anywhere regarding an engine destroyed or damaged from the EGR.

Interesting point. I cannot think of anything in the Duramax Forum either.

I agree with both Lins and Burton above. But drive it at least half an hour before doing any vibration tests. Any truck that sits for extended periods of several months will develop temporary flat spots on the tires. Usually they flex and work out and go away after several miles of driving. Just don't blame that on the vibration problem that some trucks have. Give tires a chance to smooth our. Otherwise just drive it and don't modify everything.

Sounds good. They are driving to me (35 miles). I’ll be test driving it after. If there is any vibration then I’ll notice it right away.

Just drive the truck as it is intended, working it with a load is always a good thing to do when you can. Keep on top of the routine maintenance and most importantly, learn to read the dates on the DEF containers and only use FRESH fluid. Lastly, buy your fuel at locations that have a high volume of diesel customers and stick with one or two local stations for consistency.
I wouldn't waste my time worrying about potential problems or problems others have reported instead spend your time enjoying the truck.

You should not have a dealer drive a truck to you 35 miles for delivery. You should be going to them in case there are any issues to deal with management with. Remember you do not own it until you drive it off the lot after signing. You are under too much pressure to sign when it is already in your driveway? How much off MSRP? It is really strange there is a new 17 still on somebocdy's lot. Why? Where are you?

Meeting at a Cabalas ... neutral ground lol

Previously brad Frances dealer went under. During the acquisition vehicles sat. They still have another one too.

It’s too far for most people (40 min) now that they are moving vehicles they are launching all the 17s remaining for whatever they can. Came to $14000 off MSRP and $7,000 over trade putting it even higher than private party.

My POC took over as sales manager down there. Previously the Chevy sales manager. Family and I have bought many cars from him. I think he is just moving inventory.

Oh YES - Right from Day One Off the Lot New.

Do yourself a BIG Favor and test drive that truck for 30+ miles on the highway and various types of pavement.

If the truck has a vibration ANYWHERE between 65 - 75 MPH don't buy it!

- Check it out good, because once You pay for it You own it!

- Here's a link with a couple of thousand posts about it.
2877 and counting!

https://www.cumminsforum.com/forum/...on-if-you-have-post-your-year-truck-here.html

P.S. I would never take delivery of any vehicle the way you are about to do.

It seems like most if not all the vibration issues were the two part steel rear drive shaft seems the one peace aluminum ones do not. I believe the megacab will have the one peace, just check. I would test drive the heck out of it and like others said any vibration run for the hills. So far RAM has left these people with severe vibrations hung out to dry. And the 2877 is posts not trucks with the problem. But if you have it, it is a serious problem and seems to be 100% the rear driveshaft not the tires.

Wondering why the concern is for not going to the dealer?
In the era of online sales more and more people are not even buying cars they see. This is neutral ground where no upscale can occurs and it’s us and him. Not 5 levels of managers and a finance people and techs and everything else not to mention any likelihood of upsale pressures( wouldn’t happen)

To me it’s the perfect sale. Take it on the test drive on the roads I know to compare to a truck I understand and know not to mention a good parking lot test and a freeway one exit away. This way I’m not stuck with their premeditated right turn only path.

Challenging the system. If I don’t like it I don’t sign for it and he goes back with it. I sign for it there and take delivery there. Not much else changes. Not to mention I have the sales managers personal cell phone lol.

Well if you have a personal connection the to GSM, then that is fine, You did not say that before. An hour is not too far to travel to spend 50k. But OK. The two main reasons for concern are as mentioned above, several trucks with unresolved vibration issues, and the fact the truck has been sitting for up to two years.. So you have explained the age issue but still check it closely including wind and hail and paint damage. Check for rat chewing & nests in wires. You might change fuel filters after first tank.(not cheap by the way) It has been siting for 2 years with a lot of air/humidity in the tank. Probably never filled until trip to you.
Price sounds fine if you got good price for your trade.
Good luck, enjoy.
