Throwing towing into the mix makes the mods he can do limited.
Does he have a boost gage or a pryometer installed????
Those are the first two items he will need. We need to know the current state of fueling to the engine.
A couple of items he can do if he doesn't have gages yet.
A full turbo back 4" exhaust is a good upgrade. The stock 3" system is restrictive. Just that addition will drop EGT's 100 degrees. It doesn't matter if he runs a muffler or not.
The stock 90 degree air horn on top of the engine is another restrictive item that needs to go. He has two options there. Eather a set of cool tubes or a 2nd gen 24 valve air horn. Eather one will provide more air into the engine. I have dynoed with both setups. They both came in at the same HP and torque readings. The 24 valve setup would be cheaper. Here is a pic of the one I have on my truck.
Here is a pic showing the inside of a stock air horn and a 24 valve air horn. Guess which is the 1st gen air horn.
