I've been posting in the 3rd gen non-powertrain forum, but also starting a post here to see if anyone has some options I have not considered. Truck is single rear wheel (SRW) 4WD with camper that is over 3,000 lbs. Current tires are Michelin X 245/70 X 19.5 XDE M/S with good tread, load range H, rated at 4940 lbs. @ 120 psi inflation. I have them at 88 rear and 72 front after getting them with closer to 80/70.

Tires were made in Feb 2007 which means they are over 11 1/2 years old. I knew I would have to replace them before taking any trips in next summer's heat, but friend who visited my beach-front campsite a couple of weeks and had a bad experience running old tires on his car trailer noticed some very slight cracking on rear tires. There is almost no cracking on the fronts, but I've heard that it's the cracks you can't see that are a problem and a blowout with a camper and SRW on Highway 17 which my wife and dogs in the truck would be a big problem.

I've removed the tires and wheels and am waiting for tire shop to remove last two tires so I can get (Rickson) rims refurbished. I found same tires for $875 for 4, but when I went to order they realized they are retreads and I am not putting those on my truck. They had Toyo M608Z for about 50% more (a little over $1300) than the Michelins on an expired special that they would honor for me through last Friday and due to the miscommunication will still honor for me.

While they are checking for other options for me, I found Walmart has Cooper Roadmaster RM253 133L for $1170 (and Chinese tires for much less), but thought I'd see if anyone on the forum has recommendations. I need all-season/M&S rated which I realize are not always equal but need the rating as CA will sometimes make you put on chains if not 4WD with M&S rated tires when roads are not slick. Also note that truck is not a dually and that I will probably be replacing my new tires due to age not wear.

More information that I wanted to add is that I also would consider Toyo M920 assuming I could get them for same price as the m608Z and that I can verify they are M/S rated. I need to decide and order soon as I dropped rims for powder coating this afternoon and would like to get truck/camper off jackstands by next weekend.

If you’re gonna be replacing them due to dry rot before they even wear out then I would get something on the cheaper end. A shop I used to work out sold plenty of the Roadmaster brand and we never had trouble with them.

I would look for a good all weather pattern of your choice with a 10 ply rating and preferably a cheaper brand unless you drive a lot more, kind of unusual to have tires last for almost 12 yrs.And if you're going to drive in mountains get a set of chains if ice is a problem. The best set of tires in the world won't compare to basic street pattern with chains.Shop smart and save some money.

Thanks for the replies, but tires (and brakes) are not something where I am very interested in going cheaper as I want to avoid problems. I am running Michelins from Costco on my SUV and my wifes's sedan and would have gotten them for my son's Corolla, but they had Bridgestones on sale when he had a blowout. The shop where we I used to take our cars for service went cheap on disc rotors and, even though I am careful to downshift and use brakes sparingly on long downhills, the fronts quickly warped and were replaced under warranty.

I already ordered the Toyos last Thurs. Truck/camper came with a set of chains. I realize that stopping and turning over 10K lbs. on slick roads will be difficult, even with 4WD and best tires.

Have to agree Toyos were the best tires I have had on here. A new set was on the truck when purchased got 6 years about 45k miles. Went with the tire dealer next to where I worked on a good deal on a good tire I hadn't heard of before, of course, 18k in and tires were 3/4 worn, tire guy was gone. Another 5k miles and death wobble starts in, air the tires to max helped a bit. Not worth the grief. so new tires another guy I know did me a set of Firestone Destination MT for $800 mount, balanced stems & out the door not a hint of death wobble. been on about 9k and look great handle rain/snow well. But for sure next time Toyos. Damn the deals.

I just got rid of my Firestone MTs (Mudders) loved the look and off road traction but they were GONE at 30K.
Even with proper inflation/rotation. Shame.
