I'm a big fan of stanadyne. My brother is a marine diesel mechanic they have brought back several thousand gallon tanks of bad fuel that would not run in the engine by dumping in a drum of stanadyne. Some added lubricity to protect expensive injection pumps when running ulsd which doesn't have near the lubricity that diesel used to. As mentioned before, certainly not needed on a modern diesel pickup, but I like to run it, costs me $5 a bottle to treat a tank of fuel. It also helps with demulsification to make your fuel water separator work more effectively, cetane boost, and all the other performance claims that come on an additive bottle.
No additive needed unless you travel from +50 F to +5F on one tank of fuel. You would be wise to add anti gel because the fuel in your tank wouldn’t have been treated at the tank farm. Def? Cheapest at the pump if it’s available. If not any sealed container carrying the appropriate certification which all major mfgs have. They all must meet govt spec. Walmart brand is the cheapest where I live.
According to Rocky Mountain Diesel Service in Greeley, Co the only diesel pickup engine that doesn't need an additive to lubricate the injectors is the Ford powerstroke, which they stated uses a different type of injector. They recommended the Stanadyne product, but being cheap I run Power Service additive with cetane booster. Will the engine run without addative, you bet, but I believe this ultra low sulfur fuel needs some added lubricity to keep it running right for many more miles. Just my 2 cents worth.
As as DEF goes, try to find it at the pump. All major truck stops will have it (Pilot/Flying J/Petro/TA/Loves) its on the big truck diesel side and is cheaper by the gal then buying it by the cube. As far as fuel additives go, I use Power Service. I used it in my 06 5.9 CTD in Alaska and never had a gelling issue. When I used to drive OTR pulling flatbed I also used it in my Pete. Never any problems. Now I just got back into the CTD world about 2 weeks ago with my current truck. I have not had to add DEF yet. Almost 900 miles and the gauge still reads full. I use my truck as a DD and wont be towing for another month or two depending when camper season opens up. I use PS in my current truck also, fuel here is already treated, but I don't want to take the chance of a gel up.
I won't jump in the additive discussion because it will turn into a pissing contest.
DEF is best purchase at a pump in a truck stop that has lots of traffic going through it. This is because DEF has a shelf life. The high volume truck stops are always getting fresh product because they are always going through the product. It is also less expensive there.
Got a buddy that drives a big truck. Many times at the truck stop he’s gotten a def contamination message come up. From my understanding from him the def at stations have a more loose tolerance to what comes in the jugs. He always says run what’s in the jugs not the truck stops in small trucks. Don’t shoot the messenger.
No need for additives in a modern engine with current fuel. If you travel from warm to extreme cold, you may need to treat with anti-gel or if you let your fuel sit in the tank a long time, you may need something that prevents growth in the bio blends.
Newer engines are made to run on todays fuel. Your just wasting money unless your worried about gelling. Def, buy it in the box. They don't use that much to begin with and at our shop we see big rigs with contamination problems from getting it at the pump.
