I just recently bought my first diesel, an automatic 03 cummins and everything has been running great on it, until I put it through a 375 mile trip and the tranny started acting up. After hours of driving, my "trans temp" light came on and off about three times and then it disappeared. Towards the end of the drive, the tranny was having a hard time switching from 1st to 2nd. At a dead stop, the truck wouldn't move if I let go of the break, and it struggled picking up in first gear. I checked on the transmission fluid and everything was fine. I had plenty fluid, and it didnt smell burnt. I just drove it again and it was running fine for a little while and then she started acting up again.

I would highly appreciate any suggestions. My buddies told me this is the best site to get help on any issues on my truck.

Thanks

Search feature is your friend here.

Have you serviced it? You should.

I would see if the cooler flow is good, on the highway these things almot run too cool. ( impossible ) Heat means it is slipping, or it isn't cooling right.

Governor solenoid. Makes shifting from 1st to 2nd hunt. Only way it shifts is if you floor it. Have this exact problem with my 03 3500. Do a search for it they have a TSB for it. Good luck.

Exactly. It was the governor sensor. I had it replaced when I got the truck serviced yesterday, and I guess this morning they found a couple more problems with the transmission. I should've gotten a six speed. Thanks for the help!
