MPI Twin Install

Got done putting in the stock/475 twins a few weeks ago and havent gotten around to posting up some pics and such so here it is.

The twins look terrific and perform just as advertised. The truck has much more throttle response now and has some truly incredible top end power. Install was not too bad for someone with no experience putting compounds in, and I was able to take my time since I own another vehicle and didn't need the truck to get around. All in all, I'd say it took me around 10-12 hours total over a couple of days.

EGTs are much lower now, especially in WOT, and the truck sounds like a F/18 getting ready to take off. I personally love the sound, but if you don't it can be easily drown out with a little music playing on the radio. Total boost though is at 60psi, with the intermediate being at around 20psi at WOT. I think that needs a bit of an adjustment to the wategate, but I'll get to it later. Without further ado, here are some pictures.

Here was everything laid out before I started throwing things into the truck.

Got most of the piping removed, with just the stock turbo and manifold left to take off.

Everything off, with just the downpipe left.

Stock turbo off

Everything all put together. Real clean looking setup with and MPI did a great job with the powder coating.

They are worth every penny and I would not hesitate to go back to MPI again. And a special shout out to Anarchy Diesel for sending me some new tunes for the twins. The tunes really made the kit shine and Anarchy got them out to me lickety split.

I'd recommend these to anyone.

Congrats man. Nathan definitely is right up there at the top in terms of quality. Nice guy to talk to as well.

Where's the vids?
Very Nice! We crave Vids.....
Thats nice.. Did you have to do any massaging to any hard lines to get them to fit up ok? Was the install pretty easy? I keep going back between this setup and source. Thanks in advance.
Looks good. Gotta love twins! MPI's are great....I miss mine

Nope, everything fit exactly as it was supposed to. The instructions also tell you what to do first so that you can get to other stuff easily. But all the piping and oil lines went in without a hitch. Nathan built them perfect for me.

My only fiasco was yanking out the transmission dipstick which subsequently sent transmission fluid flooding all over the garage floor. My finger acted as the plug while the old man scrambled to find the replacement tube hahaha. :hehe: Wish I had had a video of it.

And speaking of videos, I'll try to get a video of the twins in action if I can!
you changed out the tranny dip stick tube? for something different? i ask cause i have a twin kit,its a pieced together kit , prob should have just bought a kit from the first place, but i have no instruction to install this, so if you changed your tranny tube, what did you change it to?
On my MPI install i used my factory tranny dip stick tube but just tweaked it a little to make it work. Never leaked either

He sends one with his kits. No stone is left unturned from MPI.

Now you have me thinking

Yea MPi sends one with his kit which moves the dipstick out of the way a little bit. I think the stock one hit the hot pipe if you didn't change it. I suppose you could just bend the stock one out of the way, but it honestly wasn't that hard to change. Just a little messy haha. When I called Nathan and told him about it he just laughed at me haha. He told me the way I should have done it but I still for the life of me don't know what he was talking about.
And how did he tell you to change it?
And how did he tell you to change it?
I honestly don't remember. It sounded very smart though. Much smarter than the way I did it haha
If you don't mind me asking. I have read a lot on here about twin turbo installs taking 8-12 hours or a weekend, but what makes it take so long if the parts are all there and its just remove and replace? I am just curious and I do not know much about twin turbo install and would like to know or future reference cause the time it takes kind of scares me to tackle it someday.
Well from installing my BD twins Ill start with saying personally I think the mount they use for the bottom turbo is the most retarded design compared to how most other kits that uses a plate and tube that bolts to the oil drain then mounts to the side of the block but i suppose everyone has to be different. They take a while due to turning the housings and getting everything lined up to tighten down.

Its just more the fact that everything ultimately needs to be finagled and man handled into position. Most of the parts are heavy, so its sort of a struggle to hold up a part and then bolt it into place. Luckily for me I had a second guy there to help, but its still hard.

Some other stuff is just plain hard to get to. Like the coolant pipe that needs to be replaced that runs behind the block. You can take it out, but its just time consuming. And every now and again you will run into something that you don't know what it is that you may have to research on here for a minute or two before continuing. It all adds up in the end. If I had it all to do over again though, I'd probably be able to cut that time in half.
If you don't mind sharing could you pm how much the kit costed you? I'm in the market for one.
It says S400. Is that a 475?
so how does she run with stock fueling? did you ever get to fine tuning your set up yet? thanks in advance.

Yep!

She runs great, man. Real clean, its actually pretty hard to roll some coal even if you try. And yea I tweaked the wastegate a bit, but as I tightened it down I was losing boost in the intermediate pipe so I backed it back off to where it was before I moved it and there it will stay!

I'll eventually make a drive pressure gauge so it can be dialed in perfect but that will be a little bit down the road. I don't have enough good things to say about it though. Drives great, sounds great, and has a great spool up.
