That's kind of funny. I've flashed mine close to 100 times trying to get it right.

Timing 2, mild no att, on tow is safe. Running stock puts timing a little too high on 2

Try these combos
Stock/ timing 1
Tow/ timing 1,2,3
Street/ timing 2,3,4
Performance/ timing 3,4,5
Hot damn/ performance / timing 4,5
Safest being tow/timing 2

Not to jump someone's thread, but 3 weeks ago I pull my camper to the beach. Started out with the timing on 2 / on tow mode. Could NOT control my egt's on the smallest hill's. I ended up setting the timing on 5 and ran the tuner on preformance and controlled the egt's with my right foot. With the tuner on 2 / tow the egt's were 1450 at anytime and backing off the accelator all the time, down to 40-50 mph. With the tuner on 5 / preformance I could run up the mountain's at 70mph with the egt's at 1250 all day long. So I'm thinking what might work on one truck, might not work on another. Idk

when you inject fuel earlier, it has longer time to burn in the cylinder...

this allows the cylinder head face and the piston crown longer time to absorb the heat. You then see correspondingly less heat in the exhaust gas exiting the engine.

any idea what happens to a piston crown that absorbs too much heat?

I think it's funny you ask about the crown. With 70k on the clock i installed a new head, the pistons were like new. No cracks, hot spots. They cleaned up with a dry cloth, beautiful

I'm towing on 5 and performance also and don't see high egts but I really baby the truck.
I crossed the scales at 18k (gvw) I guess it's not that heavy of a load for these trucks

I run my mini on performance and was going to go from 3 to 4 on the timing. Will going to 4 make it smoke more. Not really wanting to blow more smoke.
Timing level 4 would be a good choice on the performance setting. Roll into the throttle on hard acceleration to keep the smoke down.

This might be a silly question, but how do you know what timing your truck likes best? Are you guys listing to the noise? Looking at milage, or just overall running? I'm trying to figure out the best tune/timing combo for highway driving right now and I'm not really noticing that much of a difference.

I only run mcc, so my timing and duration maps are very different from the box tunes. Try some of the combos vatalaro posted. The higher levels run more timing in the cruising range which should net better mileage

The best combos I have run yet were Tow/timing 3 and street/timing 4 the street/4 will net better mpg and obviously more power, but is pretty hard on the trans.
