I have a lot of fine metal in my transfer case fluid. 180000 miles on a 2014 5500 manual 4 as shift. Do you run it tell it let’s go or rebuild / replace now? I changed the fluid again after 1500 miles and it was absolutely putrid. Brown and stinking, it actually looked like metallic paint there was so much metal in it.

And I would rebuild/replace before it lets loose on the freeway and destroys the transmission and floor of truck.

They’re a pretty straightforward install. Basic tools and a trans jack can get it done, a lift is preferable. If I remember right, there was a guy on here a while back who posted photos of a rebuild of his BW tcase.
Might be worth checking local junkyards, just check the oil before you buy it so you have an idea what you’re getting. For about $1,500 you can get a reman.

This is the post I was thinking of, not really a “rebuild” more of a tear down. But it gives you an idea of what’s inside and if it’s something your able to tackle.

Apparently there are no transfer cases for the 5500 on the country. I’m looking at trading or the junkyard at this point

What was the service regimen of the transfer case?

Unfortunately I’m a boat guy not a truck guy so it was bad never changed. I thought that the old school thought never change the trans fluid unless you have a problem was true. It is was never changed till recently
It is now too late

At 473k miles, the transfer case was still going strong in my 2018 RAM 4500 Cab & Chassis. Transfer case fluid was drained & filled every 60k miles....so basically every sump filter change of the ol’ AS69RC (which was still working perfectly at 473k miles, too).

Dexron VI from O’Reilly Auto Parts was the juice of choice; a special thanks to @Jhenderson for the assist of knowledge.

Do the C&C trucks use a different transfer case then the pickups?

edit: The reason I’m asking, it looks like USpowertrain has re-mans in stock for both 2500/3500 as well as 3500/4500/5500. They’re a different item numbers and have a different price, but I can’t seem to see what’s actually different? BW still calls them by the same bw44-46/47 designation.

I change the transfer case fluid every 30,000 miles. Dexron 3 is cheap. That is the BW factory fill, btw.

Keep us updated on the install! Just out of curiosity, did you happen to ask the difference between the cab and chassis tcase and the pickup tcase? There was a significant price difference and I can’t find any different designation between the two from BW.

I did not ask but I definitely will when I send the old one back there is a 2000 dollar core charge. It would seem that all 5500 would essentially be cab and chassis. Also comes with a 12 month warranty so all should be well 👍🏻

Has anyone changed one of these out ? Is it a straight forward job or really involved?
Yes fairly easy. Basic tools to remove and replace the tcase. Opening one up and rebuilding yourself requires some very heavy duty snap ring pliers.

One important thing you need to do is support the transmission while removing the tcase. A floor jack works. When removing the tcase you are temporarily removing the rear mount.
