Just bought my first Dodge cummins a few months ago. Love the truck but I'm looking for a little help. I'm getting horrible fuel economy out of it and am trying to check various things to see if I can correct the problem.

The truck is a 2005 Dodge Ram 3500 QC SLT daully 4x4 LB.

This truck has both an IAT and an MAP sensor right? If so where are they and can someone post a picture to aid in finding them? I want to remove them and clean them to see if that helps. Thanks

I assume IAT is Intake Air Temp. That one is on the top of the intake. The Map is on the drivers side of the motor near the 3rd or 4th injector supply line.

you may need to get a wiring digram for it. I am doing some electrical work on the 6.7L trucks right now and that has both of them in one sensor. There is more than one IAT as well. The one on the intake tube FX mentioned and the one thats built into the MAP. What MPG are you getting with your truck? You have a dually thats one strike against fuel mileage, you have a 4x4, thats two, and if you have an auto, thats three, pretty much the worst fuel mileage you can get out of one of these trucks comparitively.

The IAT\MAP is a single sensor on the back part of the intake manifold, around #4 injection line.

If its dirty you have other problems, but, check it anyway.

Mileage problems can be as simple as driving style and are generally not a simple solution so don't get fristrated. :thumbsup

Thanks too cerberusiam. I know my driving habbits should be supporting better numbers than I'm getting. I'm trying one thing at a time to see if I can fix/better the situation.

Lets say that the sensor is dirty, what are the other problems that I would have?

Thanks Shibbyutman. Yeah it's an auto too. The truck seems to run good, but it is not only my first cummins but my first diesel so things are still new to me. It's completly stock with 73K miles. However I'm only getting about 8-9 MPG city pulling a 5.5K lbs lawn trailer around and about 10-11 empty. That is hand calculated and driving real easy, making sure to keep the rpms under 2K all the time. 80psi in the tires. New air filter and fuel filter. New fluids all the way around and synthetics where I could. Any ideas?

That seems a bit low to me, even for a dually. Do you have a boost gauge or or a pyro? Are you getting any smoke out the tailpipe? It would seem to me that if you were getting that bad of fuel mileage you would be making smoke of some form. That would be indicative of maybe a boost leak. Do you have a plastic end cap intercooler? Those can fail even under stock conditions. If you have low boost, or high egt's for one reason or another I would say you have a boost/fueling issue.

That is low for sure. I have a lifted 4x4 and towing in town I average 13-14. Thats actually what I average no matter and I feel like that is a little low. These trucks in top running shape should get around 17-18.

That's what I've been thinking and reading. This truck should be getting better economy out of it than that. No gauges in the truck. I've thought about adding them, but don't the slightest clue how to install them (not the guages, but the sensors to send the signal to the gauges). Plus I figured with a stock truck I shouldnt really have a problem as long as I'm not over-working the truck.

The intercooler is the stock one with the plastic end caps. Looking at it, I didnt see anything obvious with it. (cracks, coolant leaks, etc). Any thoughts or ideas?

As far as smoke goes, there isnt any smoke with it when it's started or running. The underside of the daully fender/bed is not stained black. I do however get some smoke that I can see in the mirrors if I put the pedal to the floor from a dead stop or in motion. I mean I'm not flooding out intersections but you can definetly see some especially at night with the headlights of cars behind me. It's kinda a Blackish Gray haze. Transparent but definetly a haze. Nothing really noticable during light to normal acceleration. This normal or what should I start checking?

Thanks for all your help so far.

Thanks again for the reply. Any ideas on what I can start with to try and find and correct the problem?

Sorry to hear about your driveshaft problems. I haven't had to do anything with mine yet so I couldnt help you out there.

If they are dirty you have FOD finding its way into the air intake system. Not a good thing.

One ton dually 4x4 auto, that is about the worst configuration for mpg there is. Even so your reported mileage is really bad.

You bought the truck used , correct? If so its hard to tell what and how it was used by the PO. It is quite possible it just needs to be worked harder. About 15k, some good grades, and several hours of driving it hard would be a good thing.

Another possibility is the TC and clutches are in bad shape. If I didn't have a lot of info from previous owner I would be looking at that next.

Check out your gearing, that really could be affecting the truck.

Does the truck have any other problems, does it feel slow, the guy could have the parking brake adjusted a bit too tight.

can someone post a pic of map sensor? i think i know where it is but having difficulty removing it
if your looking at the one on the horn just upstream of the egr valve and pyro then u have the correct one. a single #18 torx (i believe )screw holding it in what makes it hard is it will be crusted with egr soot and has a rubber o ring to seal it in . if its loose enough to turn a little back and forth just keep working it and dont be to rough and it will come.

where does the one go for the edge? the one on the intake or on top of the motor next to the 4,5,6 injector plug?
