Found a truck with a manual trans, really like it but ive never driven much manual before, even the one semi we have is an auto. The only manual things i have driven before are tractors, and atvs, motorcycles.....

Any tips or opinions if i should skip it and go find me an auto. I figured that the manual would be good for towing and i plan on making big power down the road and not have to spend 5 or 6gs for a performance automatic would be nice.

Dude, spare yourself some coin and headache, and get the manual. Im looking into a new truck, specifically because I dont have the money for 2+ $5k+ rebuilds each year. I love my truck, but the trans is milking me BADLY!!

Its looking like itll be cheaper for me to buck up into an 09 Mega than keep this 07. Hate to do it, but I gotta. Or turn it back to stock, and well thats just not an option...

What year truck? For big power, Id look into an NV5600 (2000-2005) over the G56. Not knocking the G56, as thats what Ill end up with, but the NV has an iron case over the G56s aluminum case. Around 650hp the G56 has been splitting cases.

Also, apparently there isnt a whole lot of support for shafts and such in the G56, so with bigger power the shafts are flexing and gears are stripping or breaking teeth.

Thats not to say the NV wont break. Enough abuse or power, anything will break. The G56 does seem to shift smoother, but honestly I prefer the feel of the NV. That may change after I put 60,000 miles on a G56, instead of short 5 mile testdrives...

aint that the truth. . .4.10's here as well.

while having enough low end grunt to move a skyscraper, just dont plan on going anywhere quick with gears like this.

I did get her to a 9.60 in the 1/8th:hehe:

I'll be another that says I enjoy my row boat.

Stick gives you the opportunity to get much better MPH then an auto. I have had my truck for over 3 years and am so glad it has the 6spd stick in it...

LOL yea i enjoy my row boat as well.... fun thing is when u put a 5 inch exhaust on it:) and u get those little pesky cars behind u with the bright lights and big 24 inch wheels and u blow black smoke all over them taking off and they get all upset..... 4.10s are the best thing to have tho... if u ever plan on towing anything.... i mean i went up almost 3mpg just changing my air intake to the banks intake... so im getting 17.5-17.2 city and 20-22 hwy depending on how fast i wanna go.. just dont plan on getting over 90 mph.. i start getting close to the redline lol

I'm on my 8th year driving a stick behind a CTD and it is really annoying in town and a complete dream on the highway. With alot of power the clutch becomes a $1000.00 issue but you just can't replace the control of stick. Autos feel clumsy to me when pulling a load.

eh only time u need an auto.. is if u plan on going muddin... other than that .. u cant replace the feel of a stick.... u can feel exactly whats going on with ur truck.. adjust power as needed by RPMS and changing gears when needed instead of having no control..... autos are for fun and city slickers:)

all good points, its just for work in the summer i tow a lot in towards the suburbs which is a lot of stop and go...and i think an manual might really tear my leg and arm apart doing all that shifting between stop signs and stop lights...but where i live its small town farming USA, we only have two stop lights in town and thats because two major highways come through other then that its all stop signs.

5 or 6 speed? 5 would be an NV4500, 6 is the NV5600. Best trans that came in these trucks in my opinion

Couldnt have said it better! Ive learned the hard way it doesnt too well to have one truck (auto) for both...
