So i thought I was getting timing rattle, then tracked it down to the starter.... Well, that isn't the problem the mechanic just called and said he put the truck on the rack and the plate behind the motor and in front of the transmission was broken allowing the motor and tranny to sag and the flywheel is cutting into that plate:doh:.. He took off some access and metal shavings were coming out:doh:.. What is this plate and where can I find one?! has anybody heard of this???:whyme: I NEED A:shots:... This is how im gonna be getting to work till I find this part:kick:

If you are talking about the plate I think you are talking about think of it as an adapter plate so the tranny can mount to the engine. The cummins is used in various applications with various transmissions. In order for them to do this a plate is mounted between the tranny and the engine block so to run different transmissions you could change the plate and the drive line instead of changing engines.

Is it a broken flex plate or is it a broken bell housing? Does not sound good either way. I wonder how it happened? I have seen problems like this in other vehicles when the bell housing bolts were not tightened properly and they worked loose till the bell housing cracked.

Broken Adpater plate. Wow! Those are aluminum and bolted to the steel Cummins block. To be broken is just mind boggling. Maybe the tranny was once removed and not properly mated back up causing stress.

Nevertheless doubt it's common but who knows.

wow, I didn't think I'd actually be right with the flex plate, LOL. I wonder what came first the broken housing or the busted flex plate. For parts like that I always upgrade if/when you can no sense in breaking another stock one in a 120K miles.

This is fairly common w/pre 68RFE trannies. BUT they made the flexplate ALOT stronger when they came out w/the 68 because it was happening w/the 48 so often, even w/stock power. I gaurantee the flex plate broke & then came the rest of the carnage. You must have been driving this thing like a MANIAC to do that to the new style flexplate. Look @ the pic's of yours compared to Shibby's '03 flexplate. ALOT more metal on yurs, damn near as good as an aftermarket billet. Those big meats didn't help the situation!

It looks to me like the adapter cracked, let the engine/trans sag. The sag flexed the flex plate causing it to break. It doesn't look like wear on the adapter from the flex plate would have caused all of the cracks in the adapter.

Jeff.
