does anyone have a source for 4.88 ring and pinion? Randy’s ring and pinion/Yukon don’t offer anything for the magna. Going to call nitro gear back tomorrow. Torqueking in Montana is doing some research into the subject for me.
wondering if anyone has ever swapped a magna steyr front axle for the newer 19+ AAM 10.5.
So here is the story
Flew to Oregon to buy a truck when I got there no shafts in axle turned pinion knew diff was garbage. Negotiated a price for truck with a junk axle knowing a new one is about $7000. Bought truck drove it home took off cover and the entire carrier was missing and a carrier bearing had spun in housing so housing is junk.

Scouted the internet for hours and bought a complete front axle out of a burned truck in Michigan the “fire was in rear of vehicle” got new axle here all the u joint/ball joints seals were burned. Planned on replacing the external seals and running it. In the process of sliding shafts out I decided to check condition of carrier. Entire housing full of rust so now it needs rebearinged. Contact junk yard they refund me $1800 of my $3500 purchase. Pull the carrier and pinion to rebuild and the dang pinion is smeared/galled.

Sorry for the long post just trying to figure out options seems no one makes a ring and pinion for these magna axles Contemplating what to do options are.
1 swap a newer aam axle.
2 Spend about $4000 rebuilding my $3500 “ready to bolt in” junkyard axle.
3 Spend $2000 on a ram man spin free kit and send it with a marginal pinion.
4 hope and prey someone can find a 4.88 ring and pinion somewhere in the country that isn’t $3000.
5 Go on a waiting list and spend $7700 on a new axle from moparthat seems to have problems keeping gear sets alive.

keep in mind this truck will be getting a single tire conversion with 41” Goodyear’s
Any and all insight as to sourcing parts or swap info is greatly appreciated.

There’s a place somewhat near me in KY that you might want to call.

Also....have you tried

My previous truck was a 2018 RAM 4500. It had the 4.10 ratio.....but the front and rear axles were great through 473k miles when I sold it. Front received a unit bearing at 280k and the other one at 330k; one R/F axle seal and one pinion seal.

Car-part is where I sourced junkyard axle no one nationwide I’ve found is willing to pull the diff out of a complete axle

IIRC....doesn’t the Ford 450 / 550 use the same front axle? That might well open up your options if so.

No, they use a Dana "super 60".

OP I am not far from you. I have a 4.44 axle set around, the front has a bad gear set. I also have the original 4.10 set in my work truck, never skips a beat with 325k on it currently. I think they fail from neglect.

I have kicked around the idea of changing the differential to something else, retaining everything else from the tubes outward. In order to get a locking differential in there. There is not one available for the 10.8. That project, while complicated, could be done.

I’m pretty set on sticking with 4.88s since I’ll be running such large tires. The junkyard axle only had 60k on it supposedly

Narrower axles? Please explain. It's a 4500/5500 just like yours.

PS you never told us what your truck is anyway. Year, weight class, engine?

I see. I've not heard of the width difference before. Considering the body stayed the same from 2011-2018 I really have a hard time believing that. But I understand there are some suspension differences. The year splits for them are 08-14 and 15-18 if I remember correctly.

This info came from the guy at transtechca that buys up all the dealer inventory in the states.
