Elevation is a huge factor with diesels. I drive cosistantly from Tacoma, WA (sea level) to Eastern ID (elevation over 6k in some places like the continental divide, 7k). There is a huge power difference between the elevations and humidity.

It feels like another couple power levels on a chip or something. I once had a really smart race car engine builder tell me you lose 6% in power every 1,000 ft in elevation. But that was race car engines not turbo diesels though I'm sure the basic principle applies.
