Looking to buy an 2001 24v cummins. What are common things to look for that should make me walk away?

Also if I were to buy it, what tuner is best for these? Also what exhaust would y'all recommend, I want tbe 5"

Thanks!

I'd definitely look at the miles and the service history. I scored a 10 when I bought mine. 01 with 108k miles well under 20k for what some places ask for. The truck was in Preston's condition. In my opinion the 5 in exhaust is well worth it.

Some people have drone issues with 5", some don't.
Quadzilla made the best tuners for these trucks. They are hard to come by now that they went out of business. Next best thing is an Edge Comp IMO. Look for the infamous 53 block. People say they are prone to cracking.
'01s had the dana 80 rear disc option which is a plus. Six speed trucks were H.O's and have an HO vp44(less desirable for upgrades) and an HX35 turbo. Auto's had the HY35.

The rear door latches have been known to jam so check the top and bottom latches.
The only time I ha a drone was when I dumped over the axle. Its a lot better with the tail pipe.

People usually go with programmer of choice and a triple pillar gauge setup from isspro or auto meter. The Juice with attitude isn't bad but the cs/cts monitor isn't as desired. 3rd gen and up can just plug in and get everything except a pyro. 2nd gens are a lot less sophisticated mostly due to the lack of a CAN-BUS. You get a lot more functionality on the CTS and CS monitors on later model trucks.

5" can be a pain on a auto truck (clearance, fitment) around trans.

that is true! I did my exhaust in the drive way only cut the stock exhaust literally in half. took a little bit of thinking to pull both halves out but I got it done by just jacking the rear. only clearance issue I had was by the spare tire. had to take the tire off to get the tail pipe section on.

ISSPRO boost, fuel and pyro and an edge comp. you're also gonna want a better lift pump. The carter isn't going to keep up fuel pressure wise when you turn the comp up. Unless you don't wire tap the vp. Then it will last for a bit but don't rely on it and keep an eye on fuel pressure.

2001.5 had rear disc brakes, check dash, seat rip, front end components, oil leak near power steering pump.

And yeah put a good lift pump on it and fuel pressure gauge before the tuner.
Buying truck tomorrow. I don't plan on doing too much besides exhaust and intake. Will edge ez be good or is comp really worth it?
