looking at a 99 cummins

so i went and took a look at a 99 cummins auto with 165k transmission shifted pretty damn good for a truck with an stock tans. but when i took it for a ride driving normal was fine i got on it the first time fuel pressure dropped to about 5psi and the truck felt like it hiccupied but it only happened for a second and i couldn't get the truck todo it again. the guy said he just changed the fuel filter and he was positive that the fuel filter was the problem. i don't know much about cummins but i have a 96 7.3 power stroke. and when my ford was doing the same thing it was a fully clogged fuel filter. the check engine like flashed for a second. but i couldn't pull any codes out of it. does this sound like a bad injection pump or a lift pump. the guy wants 6k it has some rot on the bed cab corners are solid. oh if it helps the egts were kinda high just cursing around. they wet around 500-600 degrees. tell me what you guys think.
thanks.

500-600 is normal that's what it should be fuel dropping that low is no good. Is it chipped? Aftermarket lift pump? If it's running bigger inj or a wiretap box u need a fass or air dog to supply adequate fuel. See if he will drop the price a lil to compensate for the parts you need

500-600 isn't bad at all. At 60mph mine are a constant 700

So do you think the injection pump is fine??, and no the truck is fully stock even has the stock exhaust. Just gauges and a cold air intake. Should i be worried about the tranny with 165k on it?? Should i just put an airdog in the truck and jus drive it till the pump goes?, i want to get the truck at an even 6k because the ip is like 900 bucks.
6k seems like a steel especially if it's not a 53 block And 4x4 u could prob keep running it with stock lift pump if your not going to chip it and just watch the fuel pressure maybe the filter did being pressure back up.

Check if its a 53 block. Read the sticky in powertrain.

If the ip has been seeing that low of fuel pressure it's probably going to fail sometime soon. N it is not only $1000 bucks its a PITA to get out.
Check and see if it has a in tank lift pump. The pressures are lower on them. You actually test them by measuring volume
2000-2002 had the crappier ip. I have replaced VERY few 98.5-99 ip. And when I did they were very high mileage
it is an in tank pump. but i talked to the guy and he said he's keeping it at 6995 no lower i told him to sell it to somebody else because i only have 6k. and i talked to somebody that knows a lot about dodges and he was telling me to get it but not for 6995. but now i know all these things now that i didn't. if i get another call from the guy a month later and says he will take 6k even i will grab it but prob by then the ip or lift pump will be bad.
Not even worth 6 if its a 53 block, with the original trans, and a ip that's been seeing 5psi for who knows how long.
what is so bad with a 53 block?? will they just not hold the power.? and i think i saw that it was a 53 block.

Some 53 blocks were cast incorrectly and have a good possibility of cracking on the passenger side, below the exhaust manifold, which yields a coolant leak. As the crack grows, the leak gets worse. Though not all of them had this problem, it seems to happen enough (there are at least three threads on the first two pages of this section with cracked 53 blocks, and the owners of them trying to find new engines or blocks, or seeking advice on what's the best course of action). It is very much an issue and should be taken into consideration when looking into owning one of these trucks. Low mileage, high mileage....it can happen at any time.
Read the sticky on the 24v power train forum. Its just a gamble it could crack or it couldn't . Its a expensive gamble.

I think about 4k would be the most I would pay for a 53. The curved wall behind the heat exchanger is only 5.5mm thick when it was supposed to be 11mm thick. It was a fault in the Brazilian casting process.
Also inspect things that give signs of a temporary fix to sell it. Check antifreeze for small particles like stop leak etc. New shinny freeze plugs. And of course cracks.

I agree. Take a good flashlight and get a good look at the passenger side of the block.

You'll be able to see a stain from the antifreeze below the heat exchanger, but the crack will not be visible. It is always directly behind the heat exchanger.

I don't have the best picture on hand but the heat exchanger is in the upper left of the pic. This is a 53 block with a 12" crack behind there with a failed lock n stitch patch.

Did the lock & stitch work for awhile and then fail? Who did the lock & stitch? Did you install the brace for that area?
okay i will let the guy sit on the truck for a little wile and see what happens. but he has a 12valve that is jus sitting there and needs all brake lines and a new trans plus batteries. and he wants 4k. he is over priced on all the trucks. he needs to check his prices on them. i will get back to u guys mid week and see what he wants todo. but other than that i do not want that 24v if it has a bad block. i do not want to take the chances of the block cracking and causing a big problem.
