I know its been discussed before. I could not find anything on canbus error free bulbs though. Do they work without issue in the dome and map? I installed some regular LEDs with no luck. Just looking for something people have had good luck with without wiring resistors.

Thanks.

I’ve installed regular old Phillips LED’s in the Lao and dome lights in my truck and they work fine.

A couple of gotchas that I found:

1. LED’s are directional (aka there’s a distinct pos and beg side) unlike conventional bulbs. So if it doesn’t work one way, turn it around.

2. In order for the LED’s to operate you’ve got to keep the dash light dimmer turned all the way up. LED’s require a little over 11V of current, and the only way to do that is to keep the brightness all the way up.

3. In my truck, and this may not be the same with other trucks as I’m not sure how “tech” options affected the internal wiring. Anyway, the “push button” map and some light power was run through he glove box light switch. So before I discovered that little tidbit, the only way I could get the lights to work was to open a door or roll the dimmer switch up to the first click. After I bypassed the switch for the glovebox light, everything works perfectly.

You guys may know all this, but it took me a while to figure it out....and my son accidentally opening the glovebox after he accidentally hit one of the map lights.

Hope this helps!!

So did you just run a separate power lead to glove box? That is what mine is doing.

Believe it or not, Walmart had a kit for like 25% from Bully I think. I picked it up about 5 years ago and they have been trouble free ever since. Ive since been wanting to switch them to something with a red hue tho for easier nighttime use.

I just used piggy back connectors to connect the constant 12V source to the overhead light supply wire. (Grey/Yellow...if memory serves....it’s been a while, don’t hold me to the colors).

I’ll try and get a pic posted tonight or tomorrow.

Buy them from www.superbrightleds.com

I've purchased several sets over the years without issues, they sell regular bulbs and canbus ones I've ran them on my 02, 05, and current 12. and many other vehicles as well.they are built to a higher standard then most off the shelf ones, and are at a really economical price per the level of quality on them to give you an idea, here is a picture of a cheap amazon bulb, vs the superbrightled bulbs The superbright is noticeably brighter, and has lasted significantly longer without any issues. On my current 12 i thought i could cheap out and i was wrong, i bought some from amazon and within 4 months started having issues due to inferior build quality Now about 3 years later, i still have 0 issues with them. They are the ONLY place i would buy non headlight LED bulbs.

I think it's pretty obvious in this picture which bulb is the better bulb...

I've run cheap ebay leds in a 2005, 2010, 2012, 2015 and in my 2018 without issues. All the same bulbs. Pulled them out of one and swapped them in the next truck ( bulbs were purchased in 2012, also ran the same one's in my license plate lights without issue)

My map lights only work properly when the glove box is open and that light is on. This is weird.

I believe that could be caused by the fact that both are on the same circuit and the LED’s require more than 11 volts. The led requirement won’t be reached until the glove box pulls enough amps to actually close the circuit as the led’s don’t pull enough amps.

Ok guys, so I have to make an apology. As I went to take pics of the light setup, I realized that while I had traced the problem, I never actually got around to fixing it.

So this is what I found; rghavana is absolutely correct, the system is looking for approx 4-5 ohms of resistance, aka a standard light bulb.

I already had a few resistors laying around from another project and I tested them to check our theory. It turns out, a 4 ohm resistor (3.9 when measured on my meter) is enough to trigger the system.

Here’s where everything starts to get a little skewed....

The only problem with wiring a resistor in parallel like this:

Is that it will ALWAYS be on.... which means it will always pull about .8 amps of current:

Not to mention the resistor gets extremely hot when running constantly. Unlike when you wire them in for break light LED’s. (They only have current when the brake or blinker is activated).

Unfortunately for right now I don’t have a good solution to the problem aside from roll the dimmer switch up to turn the lights on if you’ve switched to LEDs. Every way I can think of to wire a resistor into the system will always be on with the way to system is set up....which means it’ll drain the batteries if left alone for too long. Plus, the resistor could get extremely hot and possibly cause a fire or something.

I’m toying with the idea of simply splicing a constant 12V source that’s not tied to the instrument cluster as it won’t care what the resistance is across the circuit. Luckily, the yellow/grey wire is pretty easy to trace coming out of the back of the instrument cluster.

I’ll let you know how it all works out.

I’ll give them a call and see what they can do. I too have used superbright before...good stuff...and the only ones I’ve found that carry dual circuit LED’s for things like blinker lights!

Hey guys, sorry it’s been a bit, but I moved the camper from CA to VA and there was a lot of last minute prep that I had to do to both vehicles before we left. So, I just now got the new bulbs installed in the truck, and wanted to update everyone as promised.

As a bit of history, I had installed non-canbus compliant Phillips LED’s that I got from O’Reilly auto. They worked great except for the whole, you can’t use them as push map or dome lights. The new canbus bulbs from SBL work great! So, if you ran into the same issue as me, it’s well worth it to upgrade....IMHO of course.

As was recommended, I purchased some bulbs from superbright LED’s and replaced the map, dome and glove box bulbs. The part numbers I ordered are:

4410-NW8-CB (map and dome)
194-NW5-CBT (Glove box)

As a disclaimer, I have an 05, and can’t guarantee these part numbers will fit anything else....I would assume all 3rd gen’s would be the same, but... Also, I ordered the “Natural White” color, they have several different color temp choices when you order, so over to you on that one.

First thing I noticed when I installed was the difference in color and brightness between the SBL and Phillips:

The difference in color and brightness wasn’t that big a deal to me, as I can always change the color out. FYI, the map lights are the Phillips and the dome light is the SBL

One thing I did notice though was the size difference between the map bulbs listed by SBL and the sockets in the overhead. SBL has the map light bulb the same part number as the dome bulb....but as you can see they’re not exactly the same:

The map light bulb is on the far right and the dome bulb is in the center.

Here’s a better pic of the map light LED and the SBL led side by side:

As you can see the new one is a little longer than the old. What this meant was that while installing them into the map light sockets, I ended up cracking some of the plastic that was holding the bulb socket prongs in place. They eventually fit, but I would definitely say “be careful” when installing that that you don’t break the contact off completely. Also, if you’ve never touched your map light lenses to remove them, just go ahead and order a new set before you even start....by this point in a 3rd gen’s life they’re all so brittle, just thinking about it is gonna break the little tabs off. (Again, just my 2 cents)

Other than that, the dome and glove box bulbs were very simple plug and play bulbs.

All works well and I think they’re a great upgrade to the old style incandescent bulbs. I just wish I would have discovered them before I shelled out the $$ for the Phillips versions....live and learn!
