So I have been thinking about switching my gearing from a 4.10 to a 3.73 or 3.55 and I am looking for some advice. Let me start by saying that I never tow anything and I do not intend on it. This truck is mainly a toy but I also spend some time on the highway during the summer. I would also like the idea of being able to go a little faster in the top end. I think the truck tops out around 115-120. I have not been to the track yet but I plan on going this sunday. I just ran on the dyno this past week and made 565hp and 1076tq on #2 only.

I guess my main question is will I lose alot of my acceleration and that feeling of being pinned to the seat. I also want to know that I can still pass a powerchoke with no problem on the highway. Again I am also looking for a good 1/4 mile time with the truck as well. I also see that I can buy a new set of gears online for less then 300 per axle. What else do I need to replace when I swap gears? I have a factory limited slip, can I keep this or do I need a different one? I am also running 35x12.5x16 cooper all terrains but will be looking to increase to a 36x14/15x?? (not totally sure yet lol)

What do you guys think I should run; 3.55, 3.73 or keep the 4.10's that I have. Also if anyone is interested in trading for a set then please let me know. I live in the Philadelphia are and would be interested in meeting up and swapping with someone

Thank you very much in advance for any information or help you have.

running 35's or 36's will make your 4.10s more like 3.73s. so swapping to 3.73s would be like 3.55s and so on...just leave the 4.10s unless you need to go 140 mph which of course the tires aren't meant for anyways, s speed rating is good for like 110-115 mph

I hate my 4:10s because I don't tow enough to own the 4:10. At the same time it will be nice when I rack up more miles then get 35s. I don't does that's for sure, alive at 65mph!

Going to 3.xx gears will require a carrier in the rear but the front one will be reusable. 3.55's and 35's will put a lot more stress on the tranny.

I always like to think that diesels especially cummins make most of their power low in the rpm range and with so much torque you can spin the engine up as quickly as you can whether you have 3.73 or 4.10. So if your engine revs just as fast, guess which one will make you faster. Now granted there is a point where you can over do it. I like my 33" with 3.55 much better than my 31" with 3.55.

I did the 4.10 to 3.55 swap for mileage. You will lose some acceleration, it was definately noticeable on mine. But, I did manage to get 21.5 MPG @ 70 MPH on a trip from Iowa to Ohio. Now that I tow a 21,000 lb trailer I am contemplating putting them back in ;)

I'm on the same boat and soon will have my 4.10's changed for 3.54's

longer gears will be easier on my trans because I won't have to shift into 6th gear before I'm even at freeway speeds! as for acceleration...the longer ratio will actually allow me to stay in a gear longer than 1 or 2 seconds, and spool my twins even better!

With the power my truck and the ops truck are laying out, longer gears isn't going to hurt our acceleration much if any..might even improve acceleration in my case since I have to shift, and if I'm not in a gear very long, the twins don't get a chance to spool much

I swapped my 4.10s for 3.55s a month after I bought the truck. Best thing I could have ever done. Truck actually moves alot quicker because of it loading the turbo. With the 4.10s I couldn't hit 15 psi till over drive. With the big tires, 3.73 might be a good option. And no, you don't have to swap to a different career to go from 4.10s to 3.55s. Atleast on the dana 70 you don't. And its referred to as a dana 70U in the aftermarket, i didnt know that when i was shopping around. I picked up my ring and pinion kit from east coast gear. I think it was 250 bucks. I highly recommend them. The gears are quiet and fit like a glove. I didn't even need to make any pre load or backlash adjustments.

DANA 80 needs carrier swap to go from 4.10 to 3.54.

they have 2 carriers for dana 80, 1 does 4.10 and up, the other does 3.73 and down so a rear carrier swap is required for a D80

Yeah, by the time I finished typing all that I realized I forgot about the 80. Mine is a 70 and in my years of turning wrenches I've never really ran into any one with an 80 wanting to swap gears.

Did dodge use an 80 on the 3/4 tons? The OP never mentioned what diff he has or even said if he had a 3/4 or 1 ton so all this banter might have been worth it after all...
