Never heard of a jig, all you do is tap the pin in if its out and then tab and bolt it with supplied tab and bolt from the kdp kit

Man its real easy to fix that problem I always took the radiator out so I would have a little extra room to work then its the sepentine belt fan and front cover the dowel pin is up near the left top of the cam gear. Just take the bolt out next to it and make an eggshaped metal tab with a hole in it for the bolt then just bolt it on where it covers the pin and your done. The only thing it costs is your time and maybe some antifreeze. And if you can't get the clutch fan off you can take the whole fan assembly off of the block I had to do that a couple of time also. If you were located close I'd tell you to drop it off and I'd do it but its really not hard at all.

I'm telling you theres no need to spend any money on the kit if I knew how to put pics in these replys I would put one in here so you could see the tab I make when I do them and if you pull it out you can just leave it out if you want it wont hurt anything its just for alignment during assembly. You can do this project yourself theres no need to pay someone else I'm a big do-it-yourselfer, and I even tell this to people that come into my shop wanting things done, I tell them how to do it I give them my price and I tell them if they want to do it thats fine they can call me if they get stuck or I can do its up to them and usually they go ahead and get me to do it because I was honest with them and explained it to them. So if youve ever turned a wrench before you can do this project for almost nothing. let me know how it goes and pm me if you have any trouble.

i totally understand what your saying ... but I just want to drill out the side cover and put a bolt in it to keep the dowel from backing out ,, with out and disassembly to the motor..and if upon drilling the cover i find the pin hanging out ,then i would disassemble the cover for the proper repair..:stirpot:

I do not really know much about this but I read here that it is a few hour job to get this done correctly.

What would be the point in drilling and securing the pin if that is actually what the pin does?

Or do I not understand?

what the hell is a jig?
Its gives you the right location to drill a hole that you then tap and install a bolt that will not let the KDP fall. The problem is if the KDP is already working its way out then you have to pull the cover off and tab it then fill the hole you just made by drilling it:confused013:.
I would not try and take a easy way out, I would just set aside an afternoon and pull the cover and tab it, as said above it is really not hard and you will learn something too.

I had mine done with a jig by someone who had done many. I think it's about 2 hrs start to finish, and $250. The only parts are the screw and some locktite. I wanted to go that route rather then the more expensive pulling of the cover. Either has the same end result.

The other BIG plus to removing the cover & doing the job right is you can check the torque on the inner front cover bolts that are prone to loosening.
He is right about that. I bought my truck as a kdp victim. When I replaced the gear housing I found 2 loose bolts in there. It's worth the time and learning experience to do it right.

man you definatly wanna just do this right. there is a good chance your just gonna drill the housing and find that the pin is already comin out, then you have a hole, and your havin to do it right anyway. you need to check some stuff while in there and maybe do your timing at the same time...

from what i read and was told by some specialists is pre 1996 cummins didnt use locktite on the inner bolts ..so chances are slim to non that the bolts will come loose on my 97 ..and the 97 are the most prone for the kdp symtoms..the truck only has 119 k on her stone stock..so i figure it shouldnt have rattled around too much and i have a 50 50 shot of a fix .. but i do appreciate all of your insight on the kdp guys..:confused013:

I have a jig and have done well over 100 trucks, only hit a pin on the way out twice.
My normal time start to finish was 35 minutes.
I only charged $50.
Jig is fast and easy, does the same job except you can't tighten the bolts under the cover.
