Putting together a package of parts to bump up the ol' 12v.
Ordered BW K27 turbo, 055 delivery valves, 3k governor springs, AFC live with 30-35lbs boost springs
Gauges are being shopped for; boost, egt and tranny temp. Already have the fuel pressure gauge installed.
Just put a new set of 215 Bosch injectors, got the old injectors in a box ready to ship in case I go for the 5 x 0.011 injectors. I figure the difference in nozzle opening is 20%.
Did not want to go AFC live due to busy fingers but I did, going with boost elbow https://powerdrivendiesel.com/product/adjustable-boost-elbow/ if needed.
My sanity is not the question, what am I missing or did I overlook something?

Did Some Math

I think you'll like it. Though, I wouldn't bother going from a stock 215 to just a 5x11.
Thanks,
Did you know that it is a 20% increase in hole size?
I think though you are correct, the 5 x 0.010 currently installed are new Bosch.
For $300 more, while a good price for the 5 x 0.011, that would just be icing on the cake.

In terms of cross-sectional area in the nozzle holes, a 215 nozzle is a 5x10.25, so a 5x11 is really more like a 15% increase. That said, the increase in nozzle CSA in the context of flow capacity only really comes into play at full rack, and even then it's more complex than a simple 15% increase in delivered fuel. Pressure in the line during the injection event fluctuates differently at the DV end than it does at the injector end due to hydraulic shock. The difference in nozzle flow capacity changes the line pressure curve through the entire injection event which changes the characteristics of fuel delivery to varying degrees across the range of throttle positions.

The short version is you see better gains per dollar spent with increasing nozzle size (to a point) because the fuel jet penetrates further into the charge air mix and delivers the same volume of fuel in a shorter period of time, giving a more complete burn for a given fuel delivery volume. If you were coming from a 160 injector I'd say it would be fine (215s are 30% larger than 160s), but for the $300, I'd expect the differences to be so minor I'd suggest saving your money. 'Your money' is the operative term, however.

Good Thinking....Boost Elbow now or later?

Bigger nozzles on hold.
Decided against another knob in the cabin.
Will a boost elbow be helpful in the tune?? Was thinking not going over 30-35 lbs of boost.

Injector Pop at a Barr

Going to check with PDD on Monday about the 5 x 0.011 injectors.
Wondering what the are built to pop at ????
Also wondering what the stock Bosch 5x 0.01025 pop at as well.

Interesting

Stock Bosch P-pump injectors pop at 260 bar / 3800 psi. Basic aftermarket injectors are typically set to 275-290 bar / 4000-4200 psi. Balanced across the set, of course.
Thanks, great information.

Ok, Isspro gauges are on back order, so the first, most important pieces are holding up the progress.
Found out that a boost elbow is not needed, the K27 has a boost setting on it.
Holding off on the higher Barr, slightly bigger nozzles on the 5 x 0.011's injectors but still tempted.
Moved a car on a trailer last night, excessive wheel-spin, got to place loads better on the trailer, happens to others often in my yard and i know better.

Made an appointment with DieseL Fuel Systems in Bangor Maine.
They are doing the install and tune, dyno too?

Having Second Thoughts

Having second thoughts about all of these changes even though have been planning a few years.
The Ram runs so good after changing the fuel filter and fuel screen, how could it run any better?
The 5 x 0.011 injectors arrived today. Everything is on hand.
Got a list to make sure all the stuff gets to the diesel shop.
Just thinking of loading the camper on the truck, hooking up the trailer and heading to the southwest for the winter, it is getting too cold here in Maine at night.

Dropped it off to get 'er done.
Guy was sharp, walking up to the truck he told me I had a fuel leak. Took out his little light, checked out the fuel filter, fuel pump and then the injectors. He found a leaky injector, #6.
We went through the items to be installed. Call you when it is done.

Work is Almost Done, Dual Turbos Next?

Picked up the truck.
A very different ride. Before I could mash the fuel pedal almost anytime, now that would not be smaart.
Has a turbo whine. Boost gauge goes up when going up a hill, but truck does not slow down.
The tech said he was going to start recommending the K27 turbo to his customers, he was impressed. He told me the cat was limiting, ditch it he said. Apparently, some 98's had cats, some did not, so I should not have problems at inspection time.
Told me as tuned about 350hp, if the AFC was switched on probably 450, to the limits of the turbo.

All 12 valves had cats. The only '98s that didn't have them are 24 valves.

The state of Mind (Maine) just put out a pamphlet on cat requirements for vehicles made after 2000, all must be Kalifornia compliant.
Ordered a MBRP S6100409 for the Ram.
Would like to weld the pipe together but cannot find someone, all found so far are busy until after Thanksgiving...

I didn't find any need to weld them together.
