hi, im looking at a 1993 12V 4X4 dually with 170,000 miles on it. Im a (or maybe "was") a ford fan but i have always wanted a old cummins. I know these engines are good so im not gonna ask if 170K is too much, i was just wondering how durable a getrag 5 speed is. I know they are decent from what i have read but i just wondered if there are any tips on how drive them to get the longest life out of them. Also, how much extra power can they take? I don't think i would be putting any big mods in, maybe just a few screws being turned. Thanks!

170k isnt much. they will last to 500k pretty easily with normal maintenance.

As for the getrag, i think it will take whatever power the ve pump can throw at it so you can turn your screws and be fine. The tricks to keeping the getrag alive are adding and extra quart of 5-30 oil in it and shift it like its an old diesel truck (which it is) and youll be good to go.

alright thanks for the info!

When you say driving like a old diesel truck, i take it your talking about high RPM's? I'm gonna be a truck driver when i turn 18 and im really into old rigs so if this is what you mean i understand

mine is an auto but i have a book for a getrag and it says not to use 1st gear unless pulling a heavy load, after take off run engine 1900 rpm's and put a little pressure on the shifter and it will go in gear without using the clutch. thats how truckers shift there simi.

The Getrag's don't like to be lugged down in low RPM's either. It pounds the input shaft bearing, so keep the revs up a bit. A Getrag will rattle if you are lugging it too much and if so, make sure you downshift a gear. This is really important when towing with one.

Do NOT shift without the clutch. Ever. Extra quart, change fluids once or twice a year. Don't lug it, don't power shift. Double clutch and she'll be fine. Basically don't beat the *** out of the tranny and it will take care of you.

another question that i wondered about is about how wide these trucks are? (its a dually) I know its not a powertrain question but i thought it would be better to ask it in my already exsisting thread. I just want to know because we have some narrow country roads around here and i didn't know just how much of the road im gonna be taking up haha
