First, let me say, Im a new Cummins owner....so not so savy as many of you pro Cummins owner, so if this is a dumb question, please over look it....

I have a 2014, 2500, obviously with the 6.7 in it. I have to haul this 28' box trailer from Cali to Colorado.

Now, according to the spec sheet my truck has a curb weight of about 7,800 lbs. Last night I weighed the total load, truck, trailer, ME, and all contents at 22,600 lbs. If I subtract my curb truck weight from the total, it means Im towing about 14,700 lbs...give or take a few hundy....

Now here is my question. I measure the height of my hitch before I lowered the trailer onto the truck, then re-measured it after I lowered the trailer on it. The hitch dropped 3 3/8"....so almost 3.5" after I put the trailer on. I have no way of knowing my tongue weight, but does 3.5" of squat seem like a lot? With that much squat, could I be over on my payload?

Just trying to get an idea on how much squat would be normal for a load this size...I dont want to over load my payload, which is around 2,200 lbs.

TIA Guys.

Josh

Does not look to squatted, but the worse thing would not enough tongue weight and getting that out of control swaying.

I had a small test run last night, before I make the long trek and it didnt seem to sway much at all...drove it about 60 miles on the hwy at speeds of 55-65 MPH, and no sway.....felt a touch light in the front end of my truck, but no sway.

Not sure what you are hauling in the trailer, but could you could possibly adjust your load a bit more to the rear to remove some tongue weight. I don't think you are overly tongue heavy, but for a long trip you would be best to be leveled correctly.

Don't look bad. If you want to run levelled and get rid of the slight light feeling up front, a WDH will do the job.

Im hauling my entire house in that trailer lol...we are moving, and nearly everything I own is in there....There is zero room for me to move anything....A mouse would have a hard time finding a lodging place...its PACKED OUT! So moving the load is sadly out of the question.

With that heavy of a trailer, a WDH should be mandatory, if you do have a 14,700 trailer weight, that tongue weight has to be pretty high. And, you should be running a heavy duty 2.5 tube ball mount of a like rating.

And, you can easily get a tongue weight, just go to the cat scale and drop the trailer so the axles are on one segment of the scale and the tongue jack is sitting on the next scale segment, and you will get a tongue weight.

That was my next question. I think a WDH will be my next purchase......I dont like that light feeling up front at all.
IMO, I wouldn't pull that much weight without a WDH. I think that your light front end could be a tad dangerous. Better safe than sorry, especially if your loved ones are aboard.

Good luck with that.

I think you would be fine if you get a weight distributing hitch with 1200 or 1400 pound bars on it. You need the shop you buy it from set it up for you.

Thanks for all the feedback guys.

I will be buying a WDH this week, and getting it installed prior to taking off.

Im going to go to the CAT scale and try to get a tongue weight, just for kicks and giggles.

Any suggestions on a good WDH that wont break the bank?

Whichever brand WDH you buy, make sure it is at least rated for 15K trailer and 2K tongue. Unfortunately, none rated that high will be anywhere close to cheap.

The crappy deal is, this is probably the only time I will ever use it, or haul something this heavy. Once I get to Co, Ill prob never need it again.....feels like a lot of money spent for such a small, 1 time use.

If you only use it once and it saves you and your families life on that trip then it is worth every cent. Do it once and do it right.
