so I am military stationed in Oklahoma (yeah yeah I know) but I kept my truck registered in Texas and do visit occasionally. So having that said whenever I'm in Texas I have to get it inspected like everyone else to stay legal. Can I do a 5" TURBO BACK STRAIGHT PIPE and still be good for inspection? or does that certain restrictive device have to stay in there (ie CAT BACK)? I visit the Trophy Club/ Denton area and that is most likely where it will be inspected. If it matters I am still a resident of Wichita county and that is where it is registered.

the law is every vehicle needs a muffler, and a diesel has to have a cat if it came w/ one stock...but there are always stations that will pass ya

most all inspectors will look, kinda.

its a diesel, even in emissions counties its a saftey inspection, you can also have a gutted out can hangin on the pipe to look like a cat or muffler and be good with it.

its even easier to pass if you live in a tiny town out in bfe, chances are the inspector's truck is missing the muffler and cat too.
you should have to inspect it in the county its registered. i live out west of denton and use a place in chico called chico auto parts.
in denton i use Barney's. good ol boy who wont do an emissions inspection after 3 pm... ever. he's passed plenty of saftey stuff as long as your lights, horn, and wipers are good.

I use the local muffler shop, they passed my '91 with straight-piped 5" stacks. Also doesn't hurt that we've done business with each other years.

Texas Department of Public Safety - Inspection/Rejection Criteria
The first four paragraphs pertain to you. You dont need a muffler, your turbo's exhaust wheels act a a muffler as defined by the rulebook. If equipped with a cat, you still have to have it. And no, you dont have to get your inspection in the same county as your registered. The safety sticker is a state safety check, ALL stations do the same check. The registration just determines if you have to do an emission test or not. If you are registared in a county with an emissions test, then yes you have to get inspected in that county. I hope this clears it up for you alittle.

BTW, I'm registered in Liberty county, (non-emission) and got my truck inspected in Harris county which is about the strictest emission county in Texas. It passed with flying colors, including the 5% window tint.
