Hey, been a while since i tried to diagnose this problem, but with local temps around here in uptsate NY getting to about 10 at best, my problem has come back.

I got an 01 cummins HO, 6spd, SBDD, AFE intake, ATS mani, Airdog 2 165, DDP75's (right now) but will have bigger sticks in this summer, and a Smarty.

My problem is I can start the truck up but after about 5 mins (whether plugged in or not) the truck idle starts bouncing, hunting for fuel i think? The other day i drained my filters in my heated garage n found about 1oz of blue gelly stuff (guess it was cold!), but everything else was fine no gel issues, and from what i can tell the w/s filter is still working well (just changed them this past summer). Im wondering if perhaps my smarty being set on 5 is too high for the winter. Idk if I should just turn it down to 1 or take it off. Seems to be the only thing i have yet to try, but that seems a little weird to me that the smarty would be causing my hunting idle issue.

If im driving down the road i have good fuel pressure (12-15), good boost, and the pyro is low, but if i drop the hammer the truck bucks a little, like a burp of fuel goes by and it barks at me (for just a split second). If i come to a stop it hunts for idle and will bounce and almost stall before catching itself, so i end up having to keep one foot on the brake, the other on the gas and rev it to about 1200 so i dont stall in an intersection (quite a hard switch from brake to clutch on hill starts!). If the truck does die, i have to pop the hood, and bleed the fuel lines to get fuel back into the engine, and then get going down the road after apologizing to several cars about y i didnt move when the light turned.

Either way, if you managed to read all this, you must be able to tell me where to look and what to check for, and perhaps if my smarty is causing my issue or not. Thanks.

I gather your running 2 cycle oil? Where are you getting fuel at? Then what 2 cycle oil are you using?

i am running some 2 cycle oil, made for my snowmobile, but this is the first year ive ever run it, and i know i had this same problem last year when it got this cold. Gettin fuel at Hess, which they get their tanks filled daily (very busy station)

this might be related but im not sure. When i drained the filters out the color of the fuel wasnt blue, dunno if it was the oil or the diesel 911 additive that changed it. it was more of a light brown color than blue like i thought it was supposed to be.

if u pm me yer number i can send u the picture of it from my phone

Id check all of your fuel lines and connections very carefully. If you have to bleed it to get it started like that, then you are getting air in the system. Drained fuel should have more of a greenish hue, not brown. Check your lines and change your filters again and see how it runs. If you can, cut the old filters open and look them over for excessive sediment, or other buildup.

What brand/ style of 2 stroke oil are you running. A bunch of my friends with snowmobiles were running synthetic, which is not recommended for your truck. Regular TCW3 is prefered.

regular sled oil, not synthetic. and i have checked all the lines, i dropped the tank a lil just enough to reach the lines, shot em with some cleaner and put em back on, didnt look bad at all. checked tightness on all fittings under the hood, all good there as well. its so erratic and weird, i cant find a single person willing to take a look at it for me. I can show them the problem, but a stealership wont even tackle fixing it cuz of the airdog. They just point the finger at it and say that it is my problem.

**on a sidenote, after cleaning everything tonight and letting it sit outside for a while unplugged, i started the truck and it ran fine, drove it 30 miles with no problems. in hate this POS truck when its this cold. Bout ready to buy a new common rail, like all 4 of my roomates, they never have this issue.**

Make sure all of your fuel isfresh clean and feee of additives including oil. Replace the filter it is only 12 bucks. Then if it still bounces or does not accelerate right at normal running temp check the APPS voltage to from the apps to the ECM. should be between .50 and .60 volts at idle. Mine is .57 currently when correct. The main thing is it stays steady at idle. or steady throttle high idle. If it not accellerating or dying or bouncing a lot you probably need an APPS and will eventually get the codes that say so. TDhisisabout where min is getting now. I have two year old Timbo, bout do again I think.

If you had any Jell in there do not assume the paper in the filter is not coated but you can not see it.

Really? Just wait till you buddies are whining about injector failure and the cost of the injectors or the short block. Your truck is more reliable than the CR engines.

WRONG! It should not be the tag voltage. :spank: It should be BELOW tag voltage by at least 0.1 volts.

okay... heated garage... is the truck parked in there?? or parked outside??

I'm thinking that you might actually have something going on inside the VP. I read elsewhere (and I don't know this to be a fact, so help me out MoparMan) that there is a temp sensor inside of the VP44. IF that temp sensor is bad, could it be giving an incorrect throttling for the temperature, but not be "off" enough to set a code inside either brain??

In my mind, it runs well when warmer, the fuel isn't gelled and is making it to the VP44, you've got an internal issue with the VP44, or one of the sensors that controls the VP44. Extreme cold (and heat) can make electronics do wonky things.

A solder joint that's pulled apart when things contract causing the issue? Sensor not quite right? Connector that's contracted just enough to allow intermittent contact?

I think I'd start with checking all connections, but I'd be willing to put money on it being something on the inside of the VP electronics.

ima get out n check for codes again, after reading moparmans pages, id almost say APPS sensor. Had problems with it in the past, but a few days ago, no codes, so ill check again, n maybe its time to drop the $165 for a new one.

If you do...get the TIMBO one...it's a lot better... I have one on my truck. Was hoping that would cure my dead pedal...but...it's gonna be a new VP44 to cure that...Got one sitting on the shelf waiting for install.

Cut down on the oil in mix and dump some good antigel in the rig. By the way, dump the additive in before you fill the tank with fuel. Poorly mix when pour in on top of full tank. think about it....or try a few gallons of kerosene or #1 diesel if can find..

sry to rejuvinate an old thread, but i got all the codes cleared with a new TIMBO apps. just left with the code for lift pump open or whatever and the standard code that goes with all codes.

i did however figure something out, dunno whether its true or not, but when i had my smarty on 9, i turned up the options even further than stock. so i guess when i turned it down i never changed em back. The option were torque mgmt, inj timing/duration. Turns out they were all cranked up to wild, which is great during the summer, but not so great during the winter. Dunno if this could be the cause, since i was running SW5 with all settings turned all the way up. Turned em down, and it seems to run better, less smokey, but certainly doesnt stall like it did.

Is it just pure luck that this worked, or could it really be because i turned the options down??
