Has anyone ever heard of a drain plug craking in the oil pan? I noticed it was leaking and got under there and looked and sure enough it had a crack in the drain plug. I would like to know if anyone has ever heard of this happening or had it happen.

It's very common actually. One of three things probably happened. A missing washer/seal remember the one you change when you change the oil?, it's been cross threaded, or the drain plug cracked (more common than you would think.)

I personally am thinking about one of those quick connect oil drains like they sell at Geno's, but haven't done it yet.

When i change the oil in mine about a turn and a half of the plug and its flowing so fast i cant turn it any more without getting oil everywhere. Is this normal or could that have to do with why i cracked?

Seen it many many times. We get tractors backhoes crawlers loaders all have a welded up drain plug that had been cracked. First time i saw it didnt understand why someone had welded in a drain plug.

i had one that was already pretty worn out when i got the truck but i put the icing on the cake. Since our drain plugs are like an external seal where we just loosen it a little theres alot of pressure on the outer area of the plug and mine was actually caved in a little. One day i snugged it up not even that tight and snap a perfect circle broke out of it. Needless to say i bought a new one from napa and make sure i dont torque down on it

You should only be tightenin drain plugs bout 1/4 turn depended on the type. Some only use an o-ring and if overtighten it it will squish the o-ring out and it will leak. Not only that but their NPT thread which is tapered so it doesnt have to be overly tight to seal properly. Suprisin enough Ive seen 1 drain plug that was on only hand tight and it wasnt leakin to my amazment! Dont know how long it was in there for but not a drop of oil!

I've never cracked the plug itself. But I have cracked the washer putting it on. Threads looked good so I filled 'er up and lost about a gallon before I saw what was happening.

I heard of the factory plug cracking so I bought a standard Genos Garage plug. Their supplier had a very weird gasket on it. I would tighten the plug down and the very next oil change the plug was barely hand tight. I thought I had forgot to tighten it up the last time. Only it happened again after making sure it was tightened the second time. It was barey tight again.

I called genos and they immediatly sent me a new plug with a differnt gasket. They told me this has happened before so they wanted to make sure they got it right giving me a good one. So All I can say is make sure the gasket is a copper or an aluminum gasket not the hard black plastic one. It comes loose.

The oil drain plug in my 98.5 is not a NPT thread it is a straight thread and so is the oil pan. There is a rubberized washer on it that makes the seal, maybe some use an O ring but mine don't, and I bought it at Cummins as the old one was old and tired.:confused013:
