I start my truck up every morning before work, let it idle for ten minutes. Is this good for it? Do I need a high idle solenoid? I notice when i first take off there is a decent puff of blue smoke. Thanks!
Maximum wear is when the engine is cold. If you let it idle it will stay cold longer. It's best to start it and go, taking it easy until the temp gauge moves.
In the winter, I leave when the grid heaters quit cycling. Any other time I just let it run for about 30 seconds; just enough to get the oil pressure up.
You do more harm than good letting it idle when the engine is cold.
Low cylinder temps = unburnt fuel which washes the lubricating oil off the cylinder walls and rings.
Eventually fuel gets past the rings and dilutes your oil.
Not a good situation, do as Joe says, start it and drive.
yup, fire it up, give it a second to get oil pressure and work its way through everything, then sputter on down the road.
The only time mine sits and idels is at a high idle 1200rpm+. In the winter time i will fire it up, idle it around 1000rpm for a minute, then up to 1500 and a few more minutes and she is starting to warm up!
I find it interesting my buddy with...you guessed it, a powerstroke b!tches at me for not letting it warm up. He lets his truck idle for 20 minutes before pulling out.
