hey guys..

so I was looking up the mpg / iat fooler up on moparmans website.. totally makes sense to me but than I started looking at the iat values on my pulse monitor.. its -10 celcius here right now so like 14*f.. I just started my truck up with high idle on the quadzilla and exhaust brake on for 15 min.. drove to town (3 miles)... my iat value on the pulse was 74*f only... than I went and bought some coke.. then when I then to key to on and let the pulse start up, all of a sudden it said 104*f but the truck was off!? turned the truck on and it instantly when down to 86*f drove home.. value didn't go higher than 86* turned truck off.. turned key on went up to 96* cycled key again and went up to 104*..

is my iat sensor gone? would the mpg fooler resistor work and just keep this number fixed without having to replace the sensoe till summer or do I have to get a new one? or does the quad just not read it proper.

this is the last time cycling the key

So you don't have a reostat or POT hooked up?
I would try taking the IAT out and cleaning it with sensor cleaner. NOT BRAKE CLEAN.

IAT Fooler is wired up wrong if the IAT is changing. It should be solid at one temp if wired correctly.

By what I see, you don't have any resistor hooked up, right? If so, what you are seeing is heat soak, due to a warm engine.

nope i just got it hooked up.. stock.. never cleaned it .. will try when I get home

How did you wire it up? what size POT? sounds like you have it wired so that the ecm is getting a reading from both the sensor and the POT you have put in. It has to be wired up so that the IAT sensor is completely out of the equation. I put a simple switch so I could turn my from the sensor to the POT I have hooked up. It helps on cold weather starts.

Here is my forced setup. (not switched)

No sensor even used...

Now I'm experimenting with 152*F IAT temps with 0*F to 32*F weather.

no sorry what I meant to say I have nothing hooked up. my sensor is still hooked up.. didn't change anything yet.. and than my question was if the fooler would make the temp fixed.. and I already got an answer to that! ill try as soon as I get back from the work

Yes it going to be fixed with a fooler.

Why fool it? Because the colder the IAT gets below 60*F the worse MPG's get. Gives new meaning to cold air intake and how they tend to make MPG's worse not better. Like here in Idaho I can get temps as low as -25*F so that means my IAT will be roughly 20*F which now screws up the timing and makes matters worse for the MPG's. This why every whines in the winter about lower MPG's but now if you fool the computer to believing its summer then you get summer like MPG's number during the winter. You might have to discount one or two MPG's for the sake of winterized diesel (lower BTU's because of higher cetane).

IAT sensor reading should be roughly +40*F over outside temp while driving. Now after parking you got to remember there a 190-200*F coolant passage within 2-3" inches of the IAT sensor running in the intake manifold. So like you posted 86*F while driving so the outside temp was roughly 46*F outside. Which would be normal.

thanks for the info! it was a about 10*f when I did this test and that's why I started thinking because I your post it says a person should add 40-50 degrees on top. and mine was a little higher.. and it would jump around while I wasnt changing my driving and doing a steady 50km/h.
but ya now thinking about that coolant passage, would that coolant change the iat values that quickly? as soon as I did a key cycle the number would either shoot up or down. . sometimes the number went up into the 100s and sometimes back to 60s  (this is when truck is off)

I guess it all really doesn't matter anymore since the fooler will make it fixed... man this really wants to make me want to get a good old p pump again.. stupid sensors :banghead:

so moparman which resistor ended up being the best match for mpg? I just bought a set of resistors and wonderinf which one to go with..

I almost got all the way through your thread on your forum but got tired of reading. did you guys find any negatives about this iat fooler?

thanks

I put a 5K Ohm POT on mine. It goes from 107* to 292*. At 292* it trips the CEL. Other then that it works good and can swap back to normal (for cold startups) with the flip of the switch. I bought the connections from Casper so it is a plug and play deal.
Haven't had it on long so dont know what it does as far as MPG.

Moparman, I believe is using a reostat. However 2.2k ohm resistor in place of the IAT sensor fools the ECM to see about 145* of temp.

edit: Post #18 http://www.cumminsforum.com/forum/9...rts-discussion/551425-iat-mod-write-up-2.html
That is how I wired mine in.

Your resistor value should be based off of summer weather conditions. In other words what is your typical IAT temps for your summer when MPG's are high? Then you would pick a resistor value that places you close as possible to that temperature.

I'm current experimenting with 152*F and Edge Comp on 5x3 and still capable of holding 19-20 MPG with winter temps as low as 0*F here.

soooo..
just put in red-red-red-gold for 143*f..
amazing the difference for even just sound and engine response..:)

first I started my truck up the way it was let it warm up for 5 min with high idle and exhaust brake.. turned it off put resistor in there, started it up and right away heard the difference in sound.. rattles waay more just like in the summer... went for a ride and response is also way better.. tap the gas and power is there.. I might be crazy but it also felt like my tranny knew better of what gear to be in..

one thing I noticed is that when I put the resistoe in there my wait to start engine light went out right away.. this might be because I let it warm up for 5 minutes but that must've been a pretty quick warm up.. my water temp wasnt even past 70*f yet.. is it normal.. I was kind off expecting that the grid heater would stay on like normal but I read that it does.. than after I went and filled up I noticed that my grid heater was working while I was driving

gonna do the mpg test later on this week to see what's happening

Sweet. You have a Edge or what. I dont see much change as I only have a 65hp Edge box on.
Ever clean your IAT off?

Since I really don't use the IAT sensor. No... I just leave it dirty now. Just plugging the hole in the manifold. :hehe::rof

I was asking forge1992. Yeah makes sense.

no I left it in there and just put the resistor in the plug.. another thinf I noticed is that its idling a 100 rpm higher? is this normal?

Idk man sounds like different situation. Does it idle normally with the resistor unplugged? Mine is still the same.
