I never have to add oil to the engine...I change it at 8000 miles...5w/40 full synthetic Rotella and Donaldson oil filter.... and it is usually almost a quart down... but 100 miles after an oil change it is black in color...what causes that...I would think it would remain clean longer than that...

Because it's a diesel. That's what diesels do. They create a lot of soot and that soot gets past the rings and valve seals/seats and gets into the oil.
Thx...I didn't know that...Good to know...

You're always going to lose some miniscule amount of oil out the draft tube too. "Almost a quart" over an 8,000 mile OCI is pretty good in the grand scheme.
Thx. for u r reply...oil pressure is like a new one so guess I'm lucky with 157,000 on it...didn't know why the oil got so black though...

100 miles after an oil change is a little fast to soot up... Depends on how much extra fuel you have going to it and if you drive it like a racecar or not.

If its all stock and you drive it normally, I would say that's a little odd
If the oil pressure is good and it starts and runs fine I wouldnt worry about it but it does sound a little out of the ordinary.

My old 12 valve would start to get dirty between the 600-1000 mile mark
My new CR i just did my first oil change on it so Im not sure, but I've drove it over 300 miles and it is still as clean as it was when I changed it

My oil starts to get dark around 2000 miles or so, but I'm empty and not hitched 95% of the time. Most of my driving is highway too.
u know I kinda thought it was a little fast. 2..it's all stock and driving is normal...my 99 did much better...just wondering what other 01 5.9's were doing...Thx for the reply...

My previous diesel would get black oil by 50 miles after an oil change. It is just a diesel thing.

My '96 gets black pretty quick. There is an oil cooler on these trucks that doesn't drain completely,so when you add clean oil that color is blended into the clean oil, thereby beginning the darkening. My diesel Mercedes would be black in no time at all because of of this. It's pretty normal. And as mentioned before it can be effected by the amount of fueling and driving style.

as said above its a fuel thing. we have a 4bt in a backhoe and it will run 50 hours and still be clean, it runs a constant speed when digging. our end loader also has a 4bt and it will be black in one day running with up and down throttle.
