Greetings all! Thanks for all the input on my recent post regarding the HO w/ an Aisin tranny. I recently pulled the trigger and ordered a 2023 3500 dually with the HO. Again, as stated in my recent post choosing the HO is all b/c of the Aisin transmission. I know nothing is bullet proof but seems the Aisin has a better track record over the 68RFE. That said (please don't shoot me for asking, b/c this 5th gen is all new to me as I'm more familiar of my current 01' 2nd gen truck), what are things I'll be needing to know as in....

1. Do I need a turbo timer with these newer Cummins?
2. Do I need gauges to track my boost, EGT, fuel...etc.?
3. Deeper tranny pan for cooler running transmission?
4. Aftermarket lift pump or is the stock ok?
5. Aftermarket air filter system?
6. Any kind of aftermarket stuff that will help improve from stock (not regarding power)?

I'm sure I'm missing some other questions but all this goes back to what I've already done on my 2nd gen. Another note is that I'm not planning to do any power adder so no programmer or chip. I know I'm asking alot of newbie questions here but I know nothing about these newer 6.7L trucks. Thanks again for any inputs or help.

Leave it as is until the warranty runs out. Dealers are famous at denying coverage if anything has been modified.

1. Do I need a turbo timer with these newer Cummins?

No, the newer turbos are water and oil cooled. But it is a good practice to let the truck idle for a couple of minutes after working hard, if you were towing by the time you unhitch and park it'll basically be fine.

2. Do I need gauges to track my boost, EGT, fuel...etc.?

No, you can read most of the in the instrument cluster, and assuming a stock truck, you don't need to monitor much more then what it already tells you. If you want you could get an Edge Insight CTS3 to monitor extras

3. Deeper tranny pan for cooler running transmission?

Unnecessary, but if you want the underside bling, i'd recommend PML

4. Aftermarket lift pump or is the stock ok?

Leave as is

5. Aftermarket air filter system?

Your factory intake is a cold air intake, it works great, no need to mess with it

6. Any kind of aftermarket stuff that will help improve from stock (not regarding power)?

Depends on your use and loadout, i like having airbags, if i were ordering, i'd make sure to have the factory air ride, on a 3500 dually it is just airbags with auto levelling and a compressor built in, fully controlled on your radio, it's pretty slick In terms of other aftermarket stuff, it really depends on your needs to make your life easier

No

There are boost and trans temp gauges available stock. If you want more gauges, best thing to go with it a tuner or monitor than can have all gauges in one.
3. Deeper tranny pan for cooler running transmission?
Not needed. I would only delete the transmission thermostat block. Those can have issues.
4. Aftermarket lift pump or is the stock ok?
Stock is perfect. No VP44 here!
5. Aftermarket air filter system?
Stock is best air filtration system now. It’s really a CAI that actually filters well.
6. Any kind of aftermarket stuff that will help improve from stock (not regarding power)?
Not really. The trucks are actually well engineered nowadays. For example, they already come with dual fuel filters.

Edit: Looks like Loki beat me to it…🫠

There you go. 2 well respected members both with the exact same conclusions.
I agree with all but 1 thing. The new trucks are not well engineered. Look at all the recalls from 18-20. CP-4 pumps failing, 68rfe can blow the ATF dipstick & spew oil causing a fire. New trucks sitting at the dealer for months because they can’t get the parts. All this for $80-100k. Ridiculous at best.

The CP4 is a non-issue on new trucks, his truck will have the CP3, and the 68 issues are a non issue for him, as he ordered the aisin. I dodged those issues by getting an 18 personally, almost 80k miles now and it has yet to go to the dealer for anything

I admit, CP4 was a bad bean counter move, but they made it right in the end.

68rfe spewing… well that’s what happens when you overheat a trans and the vent is caked in mud. Any older truck will also do that. It’s just they didn’t care back then. Nowadays, many buy these trucks uninformed and would happily overheat the trans to the point of catastrophic failure.

As someone who went back and forth between 4th gen, 3rd gen, and now 4.5 gen, I can definitely say they are engineered better than the old ones.

And recalls and TSBs are good. Lots of issues that were simply unaddressed with the old trucks. Back then, many owners would fix it themselves with various aftermarket upgrades.

1. Do I need a turbo timer with these newer Cummins?
Nope. Just let it idle for a minute after towing real heavy

2. Do I need gauges to track my boost, EGT, fuel...etc.?
Nope. The truck monitors and has nanny's for all of it. Get an edge, ez lynk, or other monitoring device if you wish to see. There's enough sensors on these trucks that all of it is either in the cluster or monitored by the ECM.

3. Deeper tranny pan for cooler running transmission?
Nope. Mine has never gone over 190* A better and cheaper help to run cooler is a thermal bypass delete. That has lowered my temps nicely.

4. Aftermarket lift pump or is the stock ok?
Stock is perfect. Filtration is great as well. If you plan on added power, upgrade to the Fleece in-tank replacement pump but keep OEM filtration.

5. Aftermarket air filter system?
Waste of money. Stock is a cold air already and filters better than anything on the market. Only good if you want more turbo noise at the expense of less filtration.

6. Any kind of aftermarket stuff that will help improve from stock (not regarding power)?
None - you ordered a dually so hopefully you checked the box for 4.10 gears.

Agree was just reading about a guy who changed out his trans pan and was accused to not using the proper atf (without checking) when he had a problems, lucky his problems was a just sensor and the filter fell off into the pan so now days you really need to be very carful about any changes you make to the truck...

Thanks for all the inputs. I really wish I added the air bags now that you said that. I did reach back out to the dealer to see if it isn't too late to add it but they said they'll let me know. I guess ultimately I can go aftermarket on that but it would be nice to have it build in from the factory with controls all tied in...oh well...we'll see i guess.

Thanks, I'll look into that transmission thermostat block you're talking about.

Thanks for all the inputs, as somone else already mentioned here regarding thermal bypass delete....I'm assuming this is the same "thermal block" thing? Also, I couldn't get the 4.10 gears as I've selected to go with a HO with Aisin. Only option I had was the 3.73

Thank you all for the inputs! I'm sure I will have other questions later down the road but these were some of the more important ones I was thinking about as I'm just familiar with my current 2nd gen which I truly love and plan on keeping. The only other thing I replied back to someone here is I now really wish I added the factory air system, perhaps it isn't too late into the build to be added since I asked my dealer. If not I guess I can always go aftermarket??

Yup same thing. You should've been able to get 4.10's on a dually unless that has changed for the new year. Regardless of SO or HO Cummins.

Perform maintenance by the book....and don’t skimp on any of the filters (use MOPAR or Fleetguard) and you’ll be golden.

Please......don’t allow the savings of some of those IFJF filters or those Diesly filters drag you down, at least during warranty.

Oh I learned this from a diesel tech and this goes for anyone reading this thread. If you ever have to let it idle for an extended period of time, turn on high idle.

This will do a couple things - help keep the EGR closed so it doesn't soot up the intake as much, keep the DPF cleaner because of the higher exhaust flow, and It will keep the emissions equipment hot and happy.

That's my .02 for the day. Even though that's basically worthless with today's economy.
