Hp with tuner on 235hp

OK Im a little confused. I have the04 235HP so engine. I am ordering a smarty tuner. It is the same tuner that is used with the 305 and 325 hp cummins. So my question is since it is putting the same program in that is does for the 325hp anf from you you guys say the onler difference in the 235 and 305 is they program in the ecm does that mean with say a 30hp tume int would take me to the 305 or 325 plus 30hp. Hope you can see why this seams confusing.

That's actually a really good question. I never thought about that. I always assumed it was 30 over whatever your truck is stock???

It programs your truck with the 305, +30 tune I believe. It's not a blanket tune, the Smarty has tunes for the 03/04 and 04.5-07 in it, and when it communicates with your ECM it chooses the correct tuning to tune. That's my understanding anyhow.

That makes sense. Now, someday, someone is gonna ask that again and I'll know an answer. I'll sound like the a smart guy haha.thanks guys
OK to make sure I have this straight before I tune my truck. If I put the 30HP tune on my 235 HP cummins it would be 335 hp?
I don't think so. When I put my smarty on level 1 (30 HP), I can't tell a difference. Level 2 and up is a different story.
On a S.O. it will add whatever the tune is supposed to add then a little more. Say sw 3 on a Jr is advertised as 100 horse. It adds more than advertised on all trucks. Like actually 106 vs the 100 advertised. So a 250 version 03 would be approximately 366 ish at the flywheel. And take it back to stock and it wont be the 305 program from the Smarty. It will be back the same as it was when stock, ie 235 (Ca) or 250 (Fed).

You guys can share dyno numbers if you get them.

that is certainly different than what Smarty said for years...

and different from my experience on my 250hp trucks when I programmed them as 305hp trucks and saw no difference in performance
So, my Ca 235 HP will tow and feel the same till I tune it for 100 more HP? Won't that cause issues with the stock trans?

agree-
I was told that the smarty makes all the engines the same, Cal, SO, HO, etc.
Agree, Was told Smarty makes all the same. However i also agree with MGDoug3. Cant tell any difference on level 1.????
I notice on my Insight, on level one, my engine load goes up to 100%. Any other level is only goes up to 60 something. I believe level one is timing only, no fuel added.
Everybody and their brothers developed mods for the 305 in 03. TST shows dynos before and after. Something like 195/600 increase over stock rwhp with no mod except for a swiss cheesed air filter box and their PMCR. I bet a 341 turbo wouldn't do that very long! I imagine they are all rated for gains over actual stock rwhp. Craig
you'd see higher gains on the S.O than on the H.O wouldn't you?
you'd see higher gains on the S.O than on the H.O wouldn't you?
was first told yes... but I now find out no. it only gives you what it adds, plus the original HP.
start out with the lower HP and you end up with less than HO w/same tuner settings.
smarty does not make them even.
"you'd see higher gains on the S.O than on the H.O wouldn't you?" Mark @ TST would be good to talk to, just select tech support when you call. He was with Cummins for 32 yrs (the last 12 as a turbo engineer) and he tells it like it is. He's an old-school engineer from the days when colleges taught nuclear engineering and steam. His dad developed the PT fuel system which is still one of the most popular systems in the world. I've quizzed him for endless hours, over the years. Extremely intelligent and humble and talks on your level. Definitely a treat to talk to a tech support with such thorough knowledge. He knows a lot about Smarty, too, cuz Smarty used his shop/dyno to develop their tuner. He didn't try to push me either way but after talking to him for about 2 hrs about tuners, I got the PMCR R49. The longer I have it, the better I like it. Craig
Here has been my experience...
I have the 235 HP Commifornia version.
No programmer: 0-60 11.1 seconds
Smarty S-06 REVO SW-5 (90horse over stock) 0-60 8.5 seconds.
Soooooo adding ONLY 90 horse decreased the 0-6- time by over 2.5 seconds?
I really think loading the Smarty added 70 horse to my 235 to bring it to 305 and then added 90 horse for a total of 395 BHP.
Why do I think I have almost 400 BHP? Look at the new diesels. According to the magazines Ford, Dodge, and Chevy all 0-60 around 8.5- 8.8 seconds, with 350-400 BHP.
Additionally SW-7 (160 horse over "stock") brings 0-60 down to 7.2 seconds.
Speedometer is correct and my stopwatch and Edge Insight agree.
One last thing- SW 9 also 0-60s at 7.2 seconds but the EGTs are hotter and a lot more smoke but no more seat of the pants power.
I have gone back and forth between 250hp and 305hp calibrations on my last 03 and once tuned, I could tell no difference in performance
