5hrs sounds about right. As long as they are replacing the tappets also. If not then about 1hr to change just the cam shaft. Fishing new tappets into place is time consuming like mentioned before.

$500 extra labor is definately high though. That's $100 an hour.

The head being off really doesn't change the amount of time it takes to change the cam and tappets. Only thing that needs to be removed from the top side is the rockers and push tubes. I've done them with and without the head on and it really makes no difference IMO.

I would'nt be to upset though if I was you. Being charged $500 for a head gasket and KDP fix is a hell of a deal
