https://www.felling.com/towing-cdl-requirements/

State A must, however, honor the out-of-state license issued by State B to its residents: for example, if State B does not require a CDL for its residents to operate a vehicle for personal use, then State A may not require State B residents to have a CDL while operating a vehicle for personal use in State A even if State A requires its own residents to have a “Class D” CDL for this purpose.

All right I found this website and they are in fact quoting directly from the fmcsa.

They go on to say exactly what I thought about states honoring other states licensing requirements. I just didnt find it myself when I was thumbing through the fmcsa.

So if you are using you're truck for personal use and your state does not have a non com a or b or require you to have a cdl then you do not need one. And you are free to travel the country. Now if you are traveling to or from an event in which you may earn money, then you may need a cdl.

As for following the other laws of the state, like stopping at a scale well you need to be an informed individual. If an officer gives you grief or a citation it is your responsibility to be informed individual and able to show source documents showing you dont need what ever they say you do. Best bet may be just accept the ticket and appear in court.

We may have to discuss that, MiB.
My saving grace is that at least the trailer isn't overloaded, despite it also carrying extra doors, bumpers, a hardtop, and some other stuff.

For this measly load, even a 1500 may be enough the way I loaded the trailer.
As long as it's all slightly downhill, and there's no need to stop or turn.

No, Jimmy N proved that false at the airport.
Only kind of, moxie. I stopped in a temporary parking area. Didn't really park.

But on the other hand, there's a reason the trailer isn't hooked up yet. I'll have to swoop in and grab it without actually parking. Which I obviously can't do.

If I'm not mistaken he did a series of stop and goes. Totally different.

You may need to stop at scales but they cant force you to have a cdl. Well maybe if you tell them you're hauling goods to be sold?

Why would I go to that website when I just posted from the source. Feelings trailers would just be interpreting it unless they directly quote what I just did.

As for what is or is not commerce, yes that is foggy and open to interpretation. I'm willing to bet there is a document somewhere that states exactly what is and is not commerce how much money you have to win or sell something for. Felling trailer probably found that and copied it to their site. Felling trailer however is not an authority on the matter and should not be trusted as such.

For the average guy just having a truck and trailer doesnt force him into cdl territory. Unless his state has specific requirements or he is doing something that could be considered commerce.

And just because Ca and many other states have non commercial class a or b licenses doesnt mean you need one to drive through their state. If you get a different answer from every trooper you talk to it means they dont even know the regs. Sometimes it's up to the individual to be informed. Just because you get cited doesnt mean their right that's why you have the option to appear in court and plead your case.

Like driving the east coast with an expired license. I knew the regs and where to find them. As such I didnt get cited for expired license when I was pulled over.
Then it’s settled. You’ll pay the fines and expenses of anyone who takes your advice. Why didn’t you just say that in the first place?

Where did I say any of that? Which part of the fmcsa is my opinion? Pretty sure the fmcsa is a governing document.

Commercial motor vehicle (CMV) means a motor vehicle or combination of motor vehicles used in commerce to transport passengers or property if the motor vehicle is a

Which part of this do you not understand? If you're not using the truck for commerce, hauling hazmat, or 16 or more passengers you do not need a cdl. Pretty straight forward. Unless you state specifies a more stringent reg.

Geez, now we are gonna have to clarify the definition to park.
If you could be a dear and post source documents when you find it that would be great. Of course even if you do provide facts they will be argued as opinions because internet...

You should put your money where your mouth is.
Alright. Is your ego so soft that you are unable to do your own research to find a positive answer for you r situation without the safety net of someone else? You cant figure out whether or not a cdl is needed you need the insurance of someone offering to pay if you mess up? Is this the problem?
