So last week I drove my truck 60+ miles to go hunting and my truck was perfectly fine. On my way home my brothers and I stopped to get some food and still truck was running just fine, but upon getting back into the truck and starting it up there was a high pitched whistle and when i tried to move the truck, it revved up but would maybe go 3-5 mph with a ton of smoke. Now the truck is deleted, has a Mini Maxx tuner (over 2.5 yrs now) and the shop i had to have it towed to said because it was deleted they couldn't diagnose the problem and couldn't access the OBDII reader. Now i know that last part is BS because all they needed to do was unplug the tuner....anyway, is my personal diagnosis of a Boost leak correct or is my entire turbo shot?

I take it, you still have the vgt. Start by tightening all the clamps but a pressure test is, by FAR, the best way. Do you have any codes? 3-5 mph is more than a boost leak.

VGT? I'm relatively dumb to terms. I just got the truck back so I will check codes tomorrow. But it literally was fine and then it wasnt....so confusing. If it's "possibly" more than a boost leak, what are your thoughts of what it could be?

An old vgt, alone, (and some that are not so old) can cause sudden problems. Don't be surprised if you have vgt related codes. I had various vgt related codes but the biggie and most self-explanatory code was P2262, mechanical turbo failure, according to my CTS2. I could clear the code but it always came back, once the problem started. It turned out to be sticky vanes bcuz of the groove that was worn into the vane sliding mechanism by the scraper ring and the actuator couldn't move the vanes. It was NOT soot, like so many are fixated on. Mine was sootless and very clean inside.

Did you have to replace the vgt or just lube the vanes? I know nothing of turbos, but i am trying to learn so appreciate the input so far.
