I'm about to install a Nation's 180 amp HO alternator in my truck.

I've never heard anyone mention it in any discussion concerning HO alternators, but If the stock
Alternator fuse is 140 amps, shouldn't it be upgraded?

Thanks!

180 is hardly HO, nominal at best. I ran a nations 180 with no other modifications and was extremely happy with it. Amazing ac noise numbers. I highly recommended that alternator every 2nd gen owner. Ill put one on my 08’ when the time comes.

Ac noise at .012 at idle, i think it was like .014 at 2300rpm. I forget... but it was good

Unless you have excessive high load, 140 amp is fine.

I agree, the extra 40amp isn’t needed, but its more about the quality of the alternator. The nations 180 is worth the extra money simply because its excellent quality out the door, the first time. No swapping 2, 3, 4 parts store alternators just to find a good one only to have to crap out in a year or two.

Agreed, but the discussion seemed a to be about amps. But Nations is believed to be a good alt.

Just pointing that out the Nations has 12 diodes and hairpin windings. The stock alternator does not.

topdog what model and year did you use. I heard that a 2000 Dorango with a 5.9 works but I cant find one new, used or rebuilt.

Thanks to everyone for their input!

Nation's flyer that came with the alternator talked about upgrading wiring, etc.
Turns out that was for their 270 amp alternator. No worries with the 180 amp one.
It's just a drop-in unit, no wiring or fuse upgrade needed.
