Axle seal. Either the seal has a few miles, the front diff got overfilled blowing the seal, or an axle is bent. I haven't tore into the front end yet, but I can tell you it is going to be a job. Plan on doing both sides.

i did hit a pretty good pothole the other day......crap. how long can i run it till i cause bad damage?
What does the fluid smell lick and what is its consistency? put some fliud on yer finger and some axle fluid on the other. if they smell the same voila. axle seal. if not check it with the brake fliud. and so on. Cheap research. Expensive is takin it to a shop. your call.
lost a seal, pain in the but to fix. specialty tools and what not, a lot of working blind. my dad and fixed one on my '99 and on his 95. he wound up making a tool to do it, i believe the passenger side is hardest side too... i'd take it to a shop personally, it could wind up being a heckuva mess if you don't get it fixed soon. good man.
You have a pretty good drip going. I would shut her down and run a backup vehicle. Labor at a dealer is like $40-$60/hr. Might only cost you about $500-700 parts and labor. Find out if they have to order parts.

probably just the axle seal. That thing would vibrate like a mother f&^%*&^ if the axle was bent. Just keep the fluid full, or as full as possible so it doesnt take out a carrier bearing. Good luck i know they are alot of work. I am not sure about the newer trucks but my 97 leaked and my dad told me the seal was on the inside by the gears. He said almost complete dissasembly of the axle to replace. So i just kept it fulle, pulled the axle and wiped the axle off and put some oil on it and it actually stopped it

I just replaced my front drivers side axle seal. It wasnt too bad, just time consuming. As far as the fluid level: I've always been told that you want to be able to stick your finger in the fill hole and the oil should be just touching your finger tip (about 3/4" to 1" down from the fill hole).

Yes, to allow for expansion, other wise seals will go prematurely.The oil should be just touching your finger tip (about 3/4" to 1" down from the fill hole).
You shouldn't have to take the diff cover off, cause the axle will just pull out. That gear oil is fairly expensive. So if you do have to take the cover off for some reason, try to save all you can.

Personally, I don't reuse gear lube. Unless it's fairly new. It isn't that exspensive, and if it has any miles on it, it's good to change it anyways.
