HELP! H&S 5" vibrations/rattle

1752 Views 21 Replies 11 Participants Last post by  MuscleHead
Installed the H&S 5" TBE on saturday. The downpipe is awful close to the frame, maybe 1/8"-1/4". The hanger clamp was also pretty close. I thought it was just the hange clamp bumping the frame, so I trimmed the corner of it and reinstalled and problem is still there.

I know its tight, but did anyone else have this issue? I am so disgusted right now. I love dumping money into somethign and then being unhappy with the result.

any help is appreciated.

Get underneath with it running and try and locate the source. Get a pry bar and apply "some" pressure in different areas and see if it stops. Gotta locate before you fix it.

I'll give that a try, the problem is it is only doing it when its in Drive, and its not all the time.

Hopefully its an easy fix.
If it happens when you drive it, try and locate any contact points where metal on metal rubs from when the engine torques.

Thats what I thought I took care of.
There doesn't seem to be any metal on metal rubbing....from the sound/feel of it, its barely vibrating up against something.

I'll take a look when i leave work. I dno't have much patience lately. If this thing knows whats good for it....it will self heal!

Make sure its not rubbing the trans coolant lines under there.

Where was yours rubbing? Was it the Downpipe vibrating against the frame?
I had a issue with a vibration it was the pipe touching the rear shock so I just loosened the bolt and reajusted the piping. good luck

Are the clamps seated correctly and tightened enough?
installed 5" from PDI a week ago and noticed the last clamp is really close to the spare tire. might want to lower the spare a bit and push it away from the clamp while lifting it and make sure it's tight.

Seated and Tight!

I looked at the shock too, not even close. I paid especially close attention, cause I didn't want that pipe banging up my Fox 2.0!

yep thats exactly where it had like 1/4 inch gap but it would rub when i drove it
I had a vibration even on my factory exhaust when in reverse or drive but under acceleration it goes away. I think its the factory rubber hanger inserts moving around. Im sure mine are good in loose considering how many times the dealership took the dpf off :lol3:

Gotcha. I'm going to take care of that today. Thanks!
Alright. I heated it up at lunch, and dimpled the pipe a bit, and all is now good. All it took was a bit of heat and some pry bar action, and then I took a nice long vibe and rattle free ride.

Now I can start enjoying the exhaust instead of dreading the vibes!:woot::beer

:peelout
Or you can do what I did...mine had the same vibration in drive. I have the 5"TBE from HS Perf.

Take off:
- clamp that goes into the transmission
- Muffler
- Tail pipe section

Modify:
- Tail pipe section (cut off 45 degree bend on the end that the pipe flares out)

Install:
- 45 degree section of pipe that you cut off the tail pipe section
- Clamp and hangar at the "dumped" end of the exhaust

Discard:
- Tail pipe section
- Muffler

You end up with a 5" TBE straight pipe (no muffler) that is dumped in front of the rear axle, and yes, it's very, very loud when you get on it. Oh, and it cleans up the back of the truck too...no pipe sticking out.

Check the clamp that the downpipe is attached to on the 45 coming out of the turbo.
