Hey everybody, I am new to cumminsforum, so have mercy on me if i screw something up. lol :spank: Right now, I drive an 05 ram 1500, hemi, qc/sb, debadged, 22" rockstars, all that good s**t. It is a great truck, but now i want to make the move and buy myself a cummins. I am looking towards the 5.9, but Cannot decide between the 5.9 and the 6.7. I do a lot of long hauls, like oregon, CAL, UT, and many other places to go riding on the dirtbike. And im from new jersey. So the hemi is getting pretty tired. Any thoughts?

Thats pretty much the same that i have been reading about. I would rather drive trouble free than have to spend a ton of money on things to do a dpf delete and all. But i just cant decide if the 6.7 is worth doing all the deletes on or not.

Get a 5.9 and learn as much about diesel as you can. Once that truck is worn out (possibly never) the 6.7's will be running like champs and you can "upgrade".

I'd recommend going with the 5.9. The 6.7's are more app to have problems. They too are a good engine, just alot of add-on emmision components, egr, and dpf. Also been told the 6.7L is getting horrible fuel mileage in some cases. Most 5.9L's will typically get anywhere from 16-22 mpg depending on configuration of truck, transmission, driving habits, upgrades, what is being pulled, and etc. I have been happy with mine. With just a few upgrades you will get a serious increase in power over stock. Also I would reccomend a 6 speed manual, unless you go with a newer automatic. I have the four speed auto in a 2006 model and dislike it. As soon as I get it paid for it's getting built. Good luck.

5.9 for long hauls, no doubt. I am sure some 6.7 guy will come in here saying "I am totally stock and am getting 18mpg on the highway"... everybody knows that is a load of bs right there. Even all my friends that have the DPF delete on their trucks say they only average about 13-14mpg unloaded, while my 5.9 on 37s is getting 16mpg to the tank.

It is easy to add power to each, but is much much cheaper on the 5.9. Also if you do a search on youtube and find 5.9 straight pipes and 6.7 straight pipes you will find that the 5.9 sounds sooo much better.

Let us know if you have any more questions!

Thanks a lot! also very helpful. my boss has the 6.7 and he likes it, but he gets the same fuel mileage my 1500 gets. around 12. i just like the exhaust break. The fact that the 5.9 seems more long haul-friendly is a big deal to me. I drive a good amount on riding trips and to work every day. im a commercial diver, so im all over the place.
But i am just waiting til i find the truck i want. Im not too picky with cab or bed size, but definitely would like 4x4 and a manual tranny. Thanks again, and what i nice rig you have!!!!!:woot:

Outstanding. You will be very pleased with a Cummins, and probably will be getting better fuel mileage with it than your Hemi. If you get in a Cummins you will likely never get out of one.

BTW since you are wanting a manual are you going to be wanting to add a lot of power? The 05.5-07 trucks have whats called a G56. It is a smooth nice tranny, but is not the best to hold up to a lot of power upgrades. The 03-05 trucks have the NV5600. Both are 6 speed trucks but the NV5600 is a lot stronger, and has a higher 6th gear so it is pretty highway friendly.

Best thing to do is get on the forum often and read up and you will learn a WHOLE lot about these trucks!

Haha I would want a Datsun with 9mpg. Yeah gas burners really dislike big tires. Doesn't affect our trucks hardly as bad.

Fuel mileage aside, the cummins will last a long time if you take good care of it, heck, even if you beat it a bit, it will outlast any gas job....

well, nothing too crazy as far as power goes, but definitely some things. Being that im young, i still tend to drive a little heavy footed from time to time:peelout And thank you for the info on the tranny. I knew they changed to the g56 but i never knew what year it was. I really like the style of the front ends before 06. not too big of a fan of the big headlights. Or the interiors for that matter. But im glad I joined this forum, because all of you guys are really being a big help! And thanks again!:yourock:

I found a few out in pennsylvania, about an hour or so from my house. so im gonna go look this weekend and test drive a few.
